How high could I expect on the ACT without studying?

I got a 2300 on the SATs, and I’m taking the acts on saturday. I have honestly only studied like 2 sections. And I’m so tired, I really don’t feel like studying… I know that sounds really lazy, haha I’ll probably do a practice test tomorrow or something…
But just wondering, what score could I reasonably expect without much act-specific studying? Is it really kind of all the same skills as the sat (besides the fact that it has trig and science)?

Honestly, the ACT is easier than the SAT. If you scored well on the SAT Math section, then you’ll have no trouble with the ACT Math. I assume SAT reading is a bit harder, as well.

As for the ACT English, I (and many people I’ve talked to) find that section the easiest. It’s just basic grammar rules and usage.

The science section can get a bit tricky, but it’s mainly just reading charts and whatnot. If you got a 2300, I’d say you’d get approximately a 34 on the ACT.

Although your high SAT score shows that you are good at taking tests, it does not necessarily mean that you will do well on the ACT.

ACT questions are easy, but it has stricter time limits than the SAT. Those will be what will hurt you. You have to do the questions both quickly and accurately.

I will not predict that you will do poorly, because it is very possible that you will do well. I’m just saying that you shouldn’t expect to get a 36 or something like that without ever having looked at ACT material, structure, or timing.

Thanks! I’m hoping for a 34! From the sections that I did do (from the Barron’s ACT prep book), the ACT seemed harder than the SAT… is it just that the book is harder than the real thing, or is the ACT really harder for some people?

Is any specific science knowledge needed for the science section, or is it basically just interpreting data, etc?

Also, is the timing harder?

@Debater- haha you answered my question… Timing is what gets me…

How exactly have you been doing on practice tests? Those are usually pretty accurate, but not always.

I honestly haven’t even done practice tests… Like I said before I did like 2 sections from Barron’s… I think I got like a 31 and 32? Is Barron’s harder than the real thing?

Which Barron’s book are you using? If it’s the one with six practice tests, then you should probably stop. The book is horribly inaccurate.

The best way to prep for the ACT is to get the Real ACT book and take the five practice tests. Those are actual tests and give you the most accurate approximations.

The science section isn’t based on science knowledge. It’s based on reading charts, graphs, and tables. Although some science knowledge may be required, it is usually very basic biological or chemical knowledge.

I will admit that the timing on the SAT is more lax, but the ACT’s timing is not that hard. For the English section, 45 minutes to answer 75 questions is ample time. I found that I had 5-10 minutes left at the end of the section.
Mathematics requires you to answer at least 1 question per minute. Many of the questions are easy, so you can answer 2-3 easy questions in under a minute. It’s the harder questions that eat up a lot of time, but I recommend you skip them and come back to them later after racking up as many easy points as possible.
The reading section’s timing is really strenuous if you’re one of those people who reads the entire passage and then answers the questions. The ACT reading is structured so that it is beneficial to read the questions (but NOT the answer choices) first and then read the passage in a skimming manner.
The science section is based purely on data and charts. You can ignore the basis of most of the experiments and focus solely on the charts, and you’ll do fine.

Thanks for the tips! Very helpful! I’m using the Barron’s book with 3 practice tests though… I couldn’t get the real ACT book and haha now it’s kinda too late… Is there a good online resource for practice tests?

Actually, I realized that I have the free practice test ACT booklet- is that a good representation of the real thing?

Yes, it’s actually a test that they administered previously.

I got one from the counselor’s office to see, and it looks pretty solid.

Good luck on the test!

I tend to wonder what the purpose of all this hypothesization is when the same energy can devoted to actual self-improvement.

I never studied for the SAT and got a 2340 after studying for the ACT. I don’t think there’s as big a difference between them as people say there is.

Easy or hard, ACT or SAT, it is all up to each person. In most cases, if you do well in one test, you should do well in the other one with some margin of error. That is why schools would consider either score. Each person would find a different section to be easier than others. Statistics or the percentile distribution would tell you the distribution of scores. For someone who found ACT English to be the easiest section, it actually has a very tough curve (allowing no mistake). It is, however, “the easiest” section to get 35+ according to the percentile distribution. Many people complain of the difficulty in Science section, its 99% is at 33. Nevertheless, reading is the section easiest to get over 30 (10% people get 30 or above in reading but only 4-8% in other sections). So reading may be the easiest one for some people. The conclusion is, you can’t really say which section is easier than others as a generalization statement. You can only speak for yourself.

Thanks for the info!! Haha a 33 on here seems low compared to some people, yet it’s actually the 99th percentile… It’s seems like the whole top 1% is on this site! haha
And halcyonheather… wow! That’d be nice if that happened to me, haha!
Anyway, I’ll do the practice booklet today and hope for the best! I’d be happy with a 33.
And Preply, sorry for not using all of my free time to study, I guess? Haha I just finished finals… Btw this whole site seems to be about (maybe purposeless) hypothesizing…

So… I got a 33 on the practice test, and really hoping for another one from today… (though science ruined me, haha)

After talking with my friends (and self), I’ve found that the ACT/SAT conversions are basically spot on for the most part… so I would predict 34-35 for you, although that may only be attainable if you do at least some review. So maybe a 31-33 for this one. I don’t know, only you can really answer that based on whether you ran out of time or finished everything.

I took like 2 practice tests and got a 29 on both of them and got a 32 on the real thing lol

Haha I’m probably never going to end up sending this to colleges, unless I get really lucky. Even if I do get a 33, would it really be worth it to send? Timing-wise, I was good on English (actually really pleasantly surprised with 10 min extra to check, that’s never happened to me before on like anything), and pretty good on math, and reading and science were super rushed and I barely had time to really comprehend the last few questions.

If the 33 is consistent with your SAT score conversion, then go ahead. I think you can send both scores, if I’m not mistaken.

Don’t fret too much about the reading/science. The science always frustrates me since there’s so little time left when I get to question 50 or so lol
