How long did you date before getting engaged?

wow i know this thread is old but its awesome!! I thought i was going crazy because i’ve even considered getting engaged to my bf…since we’ve only been together 2 months. It’s just so strange because i’ve been in two relationships before this one, one very serious at 2 years…and was NEVER able to even imagine marriage for the others. i’ll probably officially wait until im out of college, but this thread was very inspiring :)

I know this is an old thread, but I could not resist!
Maybe a fun one to revive as the year turns… (smile)

Started dating > couple from the week after graduation. Got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2 plus years later; married 3 months later or a little more than 3 years after we started dating. Knew each other (while in other relationships) for 7 years total, though.
Celebrated 29th anniversary this past year…

I like this thread. Got unofficially engaged 3 days after we met. Met 13 days before the end of my study abroad year. Long distance courtship in pre cell phone/email/skype days. It was weekly phone calls and almost daily aerograms (remember those). Got married 13 months later. Just celebrated 32 years.

Met May 1979 (freshman year)
Engaged August 1981(between junior and senior year)
Married June 1982 (graduated on Sunday, married the next Friday evening)
Never lived together
Coming up on I think 30 years (I’ve lost count)
Might have married sooner but there was no way I was going to get married before graduating.

Dated 1 year and 8 months
Engaged five months
Married in December of 1984
Splash came along in May of 1988

We just celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary earlier this month. I guess we’re keeping one another :)

For those who believe in long dating and engagement periods;

Have DS, 26. engineer. working. Don’t expect your DD to have your grandkids until DS is 36.

Met July 1978. Started dating September 1978 (on & off for the first year). Engaged March 1982. Married May 1983. First child March 1989, second April 1992.

Am not holding my breath for any weddings (let alone grandkids) in the near future. Kids these days seem to be in even less a hurry than our generation.

^^Yep. S1 and gf have been dating for 4.5 years. He got her something small and shiny for Christmas…an ipad…

We dated on and off (mostly on) for seven years, but I knew from the moment I saw him across a crowded room that we would be married. (It’s cliche, I know, and in all honesty, it took me a while to come to grips with the concept.) 26 years and counting.

H and I dated/lived together for a year and a half then got engaged and married nine months later. Will celebrate our 38th in a few months.

Two Ds married. One dated/lived together for a year and a half, then engaged, then married a year later at age 27. Grandbaby 1 arrived almost two years later.

One dated/lived together for 3 years, got engaged, married two years later at age 26.

Another D who is engaged has been with her significant other for four years, engaged for one and will married in the spring at (almost) age 27.

I had my first date with my wife 34 years ago tonight in 1978 (December 27). We married on August 6, 1983.

smile, did you remember that, or does your wife remind you? It’s funny, because your post reminded me that my first date with longtime HS/college bf was 34 years ago tomorrow. We went to see “Superman.”

we both remember it very well. what really brought it home to both of us is that our only child is dressed in a tux tonight and going to the same social function where we were so many years ago.

So sweet. The restaurant where dh and I had our first date in 1986 burned down. lol

We met but didn’t date while we both had summer jobs in the same store in the summer of 1971, when I was between my junior and senior years of high school and he had just finished his freshman year in college. A year later, in the summer of 1972, we worked in the same store again, and this time he asked me out. By Christmas, we were an exclusive couple, even though we went to different colleges in different states. By the following summer, a year after we started dating, we were engaged.

That engagement lasted three years, mostly because I was unwilling to get married before graduating, and he wasn’t in any great hurry, either.

We got married two days after my college graduation but didn’t have children for ten years.

It should be noted for the record that my children think we were stark raving mad to get married at the ages of 21 and 23. They are now 25 and 22 and think we were way too young. They may be right. We realized we were very young but weren’t intimated by marriage. It was parenthood that intimidated us, which is why we waited so long to have kids.
