How long did you date before getting engaged?

^^^ What would you do if your kid wanted to do the same thing?

My parents knew each other for about 6 months when they got married
I was born 4 months after the wedding
you do the math
They’re very happily married though

coureur - love your story

ditto

"Almost ten years and counting since the accidental date, married two years on Tuesday. =) "

Awwww…

=) Us too. We’re both hopeless romantics… Both dissolved into laughter when we discovered that each of us had secretly squirreled away the scraps of paper that we’d written our phone numbers on before the first “date”.

I love Coureur’s story… reminds me of my own grandparents, who both recently passed away. They got married only a month or so before my grandfather was sent to the Philippines to fight in WWII. My uncle recently scanned in all of their correspondence back-and-forth-- three years’ worth of letters-- and put them on a CD for all of the kids and grandkids. I haven’t received my copy yet, but I’m very much looking forward to reading the letters… They were married over sixty years.

^ It was the “married two years” that inspired the " awwww!"

Met in June, got engaged sometime in the beginning of December although I told him two weeks after we met that I was going to marry him, and married exactly one year to the day that we met. Married 24 years.

Interesting how all-over-the-map these responses are.

Dated 1 year. Engaged 3 years. Would have been engaged for 4 years (finishing education), but a little accident now working on college applications in the next room decided to come along a bit ahead of schedule. Married 18 years.

Well, if my kid was 24 years old with a college degree and a good job in their chosen profession, the way I was, I would not have a problem with it, as long as I respected and liked their intended spouse. Both my H and I are intuitive people, as are our two kids (ages 22 and 19), and our judgements about people’s characters and compatibility have proven to be pretty sound over the years. Their two sets of grandparents’ marriages are currently 54 years and 49 years strong.

That said, I would probably freak out a little.

Met June 3, 1987, got engaged Sept. 12, 1987, planned to get married in early November, but postponed the wedding until Jan. 3, 1987 (We were overseas in Peace Corps and mom wasn’t too happy about me marrying a guy she’d never seen.) So dating (“hanging out”) for 3.5 mo, engaged another 3.5 mo–married exactly 7 mo. after we met. Tomorrow is our 23rd anniversary. We were 24 and 26 when we got married.

Just noticed this thread. Okay, dated since I college freshman and he was HS senior (his mom was my 12th grade English teacher and I came to his house to visit her–what a great MIL she was!). He told me he loved me the first day we got together, and asked me to marry him a couple months later. For real. We actually dated five years before we got married, because of college etc, living together the last year. We, like Mantori, moved up the actual timing because of our own little accident, going on five years now with her guy (two living together.) She’s 27, which means, let’s see, carry the two, uh, yup! we’ve been married 27 years.

Re: post 109-- You got married in Jan 1987, before you met? Thats pretty tricky!

First marriage: Met in June, engaged in August, married in November, lasted 7 years.

Divorced a VERY long time.

Current marriage: Met in January 2005, engaged in January 2007, married in June 2007. Bliss!

20 years today!!

We dated for 9 years. At the alter the minister said “do you Joey FINALLY take Susie to be your…” It surprised the heck out of us, but eased the tension!

Congrats to freecycle

That is funny!

My mother was a substitute teacher at my 2,500 student high school. One day she came home and asked me, “Do you know a boy named X X? I had a very bad class today and kids were throwing books out the window. This boy stood up and told them to stop it, and the class listened to him and were well-behaved from that point on.” I told her that X X was a nice boy, but he had a serious girlfriend. Well, that nice boy eventually broke up with his girlfriend and he is now my husband.

12 years! Now married 22.

lol, yeah, I noticed that after it was too late to edit. Figured that’s what killed the thread. . .

(It was actually '86 when we met, '87 when we got married. First kid was born in '88-- in case anyone thought that was the “tricky” part. . .)

Met in March 1978 and married in December 1978.

We were both college grads with jobs (yep, we worked together). DH jokes that I would not kiss him on the first date. I thought were just getting pizza, didnt realize it was a “date.”

He clarified the situation the next time we went out.

Last month we celebrated 31 years.

Dated for two years, engaged for two weeks. Married at 22 (both of us) for 35 years so far.

No “accidents” behind the short engagement. We were married for 15 years before we got around to having our first kid, by choice. Shortly after the birth of my first, my ob/gyn asked me what on earth we had been waiting for. I didn’t have a good answer. We were both students forever, then post-docs, then wanted to have tenure…blah blah. One day my husband looked at me and said, you know we really aren’t getting any younger.

The young marriage worked for us, but only because we shared the basic values (get an education) and neither of us cared about having money. It doesn’t work for everyone.

Nothing works for everybody.

Dated three weeks. Engaged five months. Married 30 years so far. No accidents.
