an hour or so

If I’m interested in the book/what it’s talking about… probably just under an hour. If it’s… “assigned” reading or something like that, that’s completely boring, probably 2-3 hours.

I would take 2-3 hours.

So that means I should get started. Our first AP English reading assignment is around 100 pages. All The Kings Men, yo! :D

Depends. Speed to get the plot, probably about 50 minutes. Normal read to enjoy some figurative language and allusions, probably two hours. Close read to truely “own” the text, probably the better part of four to five hours, if I’m lucky.

Around an hour and a half sometimes less but like other people said it can be more if the book isn’t something I’m at all interested in.

It really depends on the book (and the size of the pages and font, lol; is there some standard that we’re to assume?).

Heavy non-fiction maybe 2-4 hours (like the more complex uninteresting passages in one of those annoyingly huge science textbooks, for instance, or maybe certain works of philosophy)

Light non-fiction 1-2 hours (popular science [the selfish gene, the elegant universe, the book that I’m currently reading {gunsgermsandsteellol}], most philosophy, autobiographies ,etc.). I usually read for understanding and memorization so it takes a tad longer.

Heavy (really verbose, grandiloquent prose, poetry that requires constant analysis if you don’t want to get lost, etc.) Fiction: 1 - 1.5 hours

Light (most novels) fiction: .5-1 hour

It also depends upon what conditions I’m reading in. If it’s really loud and the setting’s distracting, I take longer.

Edit: Bwahahahaha, I so lack basic reading comprehension skills. I completely glazed over the OP ;} )

normal = not school = can be as little an hour

classics/school novels = 2 hours close reading, anywhere 2-6 hours taking copious notes

technical textbook = about 10 if its dense, about 3 if its mostly pictures

As with most people, it depends on the book. I would say about 2 hours or less if I’m really enjoying the book. Most school mandated books however would probably take me longer.

[Scientific Speed Reading: How to Read 300% Faster in 20 Minutes](http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/07/30/speed-reading-and-accelerated-learning/)
Here is a great article on how to improve reading speed. I’m currently up to about 1,500 WPM.

It really depends on the book if it is a really interesting book probably 35-40 minutes but if it is a super boring book for school anywhere from a month to an eternity.

Like everyone else says, it depends on the book. Harry Potter 7? I raced through that book. It probably took me an hour or so to read every 100 pages. Heart of Darkness? (For AP English) It took me forever- probably close to 5-6 hours. Textbook? Far too many hours. I get so distracted when I read textbooks.

depends entirely on the novel. i read Bright Lights, Big City over the summer at about a page a minute.

but if i’m reading Joyce or Faulkner or something then i’ll spend like five minutes on a single page

I think there’s something wrong with me. I have a really high comprehension rate (when we’re not timed I test between the 95th to 100th percentile in reading comp), but when I read I read at the speed I would say it. I always have. I read every single word individually, not seeing the passage as a whole.

This sucks insanely bad because I’m an English/History Double Major.

It usually takes me around an hour, depending on the novel. A random modern novel would take me about an hour. A classic novel (eg. Wuthering Heights) would take me considerably longer (2 hours).

Haha, like some of the other people on here I am also distracted easily. That’s why I read with complete quiet. My crazy noisy family basically lives upstairs, and my room is downstairs. It’s crazy quiet in my room. (Unless my sister is also downstairs with one of her noisy giggling friends.) It’s so nice!

I’m such a slow reader. Maybe 4 hours if I’m lucky. When I read, I can’t skim. I have to read every word and absorb every detail. Otherwise, I won’t enjoy the book…

An hour if I’m determined and interested in it.

It really depends.

Average…? Maybe an hour to an hour and a half.

An hour, maybe a little less. I can read extremely fast.

An hour or a little longer.

If its ap euro 3 hours or so. I love it but still
