What I asked… and did you get in to any of them, if so, which ones? and do you know any good colleges with good pre-med programs?

Most “reach” college decisions for RD haven’t come out yet…

After you have sufficient matches and safety schools, you may apply to any number of reach schools depending on how deep is your pocket. My D applied to 1 safety, 4 matches (low to mid matches), and 2 reaches (one low reach).

Those 2 questions don’t necessarily go together. The problem with attending a “reach” school is that GPA is very important in med school admissions. You want to find a balance of a school where you can get a good GPA, but still be well prepared for the MCAT. And ideally not come out with a lot of debt, as med school is very expensive. So if you are serious about med school, use those as your criteria and forget about reach schools.

I applied to 4 reaches (the acceptance rates are so low that they would be considered reaches for any applicant), 6 matches ( I guess two could be considered low reaches), and 2 safeties. So far I’ve gotten into 1 safety, 3 matches, and deferred from 1 reach.

In the fall I will be applying to 2 safeties, 3 matches, and 10 reaches. However, I won’t submit those applications if I get into my top choice early (except for my 2 safeties since they’re due in November).

Firefox has a good plan – having 1-2 safeties and 3-4 targets is ideal – after that you can have as many reaches as you want. HOWEVER, everyone should keep in mind that a reach can really be defined as either a school for which your grades/test scores are at their lower end of their 25-75% range, OR it can also include schools that accept less than roughly 20% of their applicants. Meaning a school for which you are highly qualified in terms of grades and test scores can still be a reach if they only accept, for example, 12%.

Back in the day I applied to probably 4 reaches, and I got into the top one, but not the lower ones…so weird!

@chocolate108: you should research what “a good pre-med program” is. As Intparent alludes to, your notions currently don’t match reality. Perhaps go to the pre-med forum and do some browsing?

I applied to 11 reach schools, 5 matches, and 11 safeties (UCs are included in there). So far I have gotten into 1 reach and 6 safeties. However, the rest of my reaches don’t come out until at least next week.

so far, i’ve been accepted to Wesleyan University (early write), Brandeis University, and the University of Pittsburgh (obvious safety). I’m not sure if the two that accepted me were matches or low reaches. I have to wait for 17 more schools to notify me, and the majority of them are reaches.

My D applied to 5 high reaches, 2 reaches & 2 match schools.

I applied to two colleges I considered reaches. I got into one (Michigan) but not the other (Chicago).

I applied to one high match/low reach (and a couple safeties). I wanted to apply to a couple reaches, but decided against it because I convinced myself I wouldn’t get in, but I regret that now.

I did get accepted my high match/low reach (Cal Poly for MechE), but without enough merit/financial aid to make it work.

I applied to 3 safeties, 6 Matches, and 7 arches. I’ve gotten into all of my safeties, 4 of my matches, and rejected from 3 of my reaches. I have 6 decisions left.

9 reach schools! I win. Also applied to two matches (accepted to one of them) and one safety.

3 reaches, 2 matches, 2 safeties all RD. Accepted to 1 reach, 1 match, and both safeties with huge scholarships so far. The rest will be released next week.

1 reach.

Big daddy Harvard.

I’ll be applying to one reach (Bentley), one high match (Quinnipiac), three matches (Hofstra, Pace, Scranton) and two safeties (Monmouth and Arcadia).

I applied to 3 safeties, 6 matches, and 7 reaches. I’ve been rejected from 3 of my reaches so far, but I;m still waiting on 4 decisions.
