My D is ending her junior year and has yet to take any SAT II’s. Can she take all 3 at the same time this May?

Yes. That is not uncommon. It really depends on the individual though. My S is taking three that day too. He has AP exams earlier that week and feels he will be at the top of his game and doesn’t want to break the SAT IIs up.

I believe the max # of exams is 3. BTW you don’t mention the word exam but I presume that is what your question refers to.

Mine’s taking three in May plus two APs that week.

if you search the kids thread, most of them recommend taking no more than two, due to fatigue.

older son took 3 without trouble

ps - but if all three are AP classes as well, then it does make sense…long as they don’t have two AP tests on the Friday immediately preceding the SATIIs

I was signed up for three, but after the first two I really felt like I couldn’t deal with a math exam, and skipped out. If she’s taking three make sure they’re in topics she feels confident in, and not something that would feel like a chore-- it really can be exhausting.

My son only took 2 at one time.

my son limited it to 1 or 2 due to the fatigue issue as well as limiting the number of subjects he would have to review for. But he started early enough to spread them out easily. It’s fairly common to take 3 in one sitting. If all 3 are subjects that a student is taking AP or final exams in at around the same time, it isn’t any extra review.

Since we’re on the subject - has anyone’s kid taken the SAT II Literature test? If so, what was it like?

I took three just fine… not Lit though.

carolyn,
if she signs up for 3, encourage her to ditch the last one if she doesn’t feel up to it. If she does take 3, that will offer plenty of time for a retake if one doesn’t come up to par.

My son took 2 in May, and the rest one at a time.

She’s thinking of Physics (she’s in Honor’s physics now), Math IIC (she’s in Honor’s pre-calc), and French (she took AP French 4 last year and scored a 5). She will be taking AP exams in English (not literature, the other one), US History, and Statistics the week previously.

Carolyn-my D took the Lit as a last minute change from US History. Once she began looking into taking the history she realized that she did not have the time to properly prepare since the info. was so specific. She did not find the lit. difficult. There is a lot of reading involved but she felt that even without special prep she was able to get by on the knowledge she had learned in her english classes. She did buy a book and looked over the terms a few weeks before the test.
It was a good move for her and she was very happy with the end results.

D took three one time and wasn’t happy with the score of #3. So she retook 2 in the fall, one of which was a repeat of #3 taken earlier. Do kids really need three SAT 2s now that they have to take the SAT writing as part of the SAT 1?

echosensei -
your D should evaluate the material covered in class vs. that covered in the test for Physics. The other two should be fine - but encourage a brief review for IIC.

Carolyn - my d. took this exam as a sophomore - she is not in a US school and this one was recommended as one for which you couldn’t really study. She downloaded the sample exam from the college board site but otherwise did not prep. She got a 760. I think if your d is strong in English, this would be a good bet for her. (good luck with the SAT I btw, I have been following the saga…)

My S took 1 then 2, coinciding with the end of AP exams, so he did not have to do extra prep, except a bit for the AP-Writing. It’s not so much a question of time for reviewing but of stamina on the day. But if students have survived the new SAT marathon, they may be able to do 3 tests in one sitting!

Based on our experience I’d say no more than two. D took three in one day and regretted it. Her brain was pretty well cooked by the third one, and it showed in her score. She later re-took the third one and pulled it up.
