How Much Clothing/Bedroom Closet Space Do You Have?

We talk often about clothing, shoes, etc. And some people have items from years/decades ago in their collection. (Don’t we all have a clothing item we wish we could have back!)

Makes we wonder…how much closet space do you have/use for yourself? One? More than one (off season clothing or whatever)? Is it old house 3 feet wide and that’s it? A walk in?

Post a pic of your closet at your own risk if you wish, lol.

I have one closet with my shoes in a hanging shoe holder in an extra closet in our bedroom. We have 3 closets in our bedroom. H and I each have one about 5 1/2 feet wide with rods and some pull out drawer storage. Nothing fancy but very usable. The middle closet has my shoes and extra linens and our 3 set hamper.

All of clothes are in my closet. No off season closet. I have one drawer in the one dresser in our room and H uses the rest.

I don’t even have a coat closet, I have a very small wardrobe, my husband a tiny closet, we have some unfinished storage areas in the finished attic which we did a lot of cleaning out this summer (good lord!), and an unfinished area in the finished basement (didn’t get to that yet). Both the basement and attic have two closets. My house is about 110 years old. We have a weird closet on the landing, behind it are serving stairs to the kitchen behind walls.

Walk-in closet large enough to dress in, built in dresser, adjustable shelving. Got a chair and little table in there. I don’t need all that but enjoy it.

Our first house had a walk-in closet which is much smaller than most you see in modern houses but it had a ton of shelving and worked out great. It was the design and not the size that made it work.

Best thing I ever did was learn how to fold clothes in the KonMari method. It made a HUGE difference in space and the ability to instantly find what I wanted. All my tops are in drawers folded like for a file cabinet. I can see everything I have at a glance.

We are blessed with ample closet space after a major renovation. We sacrificed a bedroom and turned it into the primary bath and closet.

My H and I share the 10 x6 walk in closet. I have two sets of hanging rods on my side and a double floor to ceiling shelves. H has a smaller double hanging rod, a corner floor to ceiling shelving section and then a bank of drawers with closed shelving above.

We also have a “pass through” closet that separates our primary bedroom and the office that has about 4 feet of hanging space on each side. I keep dresses and long stuff on my side, H has suites and dressier clothes on his. His shoe rack is in the closet as well.

We have a 10 ft long cedar closet in the office (which was the old primary) that has all our outerwear. There are closed shelves above that I can’t reach but H uses them for wool sweaters.

My favorite though is a small walk in that was the original closet in the now primary that I converted to floor to ceiling shelves for my shoes and purses. It’s the “accessories closet” and I still get a little thrill every time I open the door.

Huge walk-in in AZ (sorry, not there so no pics). More than enough space for me and DH, even some empty shelves.

In the cabin, the master has a small closet, large wardrobe, two three-drawer nightstands, and six large drawers in the platform bed. We have minimal clothing here, so still have empty space (although not as empty as shown below when DH first assembled it):

Sorry…no pics. When we built our house, one thing we wanted was separate walk in closets for DH and me in the master, and that’s what we have. Mine has a U shaped hanging layout with a set of drawers and double and shelves on two walls. There is enough space at the end of each long wall for longer dresses. DH has an L shaped layout.

But the key was…we were NOT sharing closets. Even our first house had separate (but smaller) closets for each of us in the master.

I like my closet.

Between our two closets (which are in an alcove in our bedroom) is a linen closet (we have three in our house).

NOT ENOUGH!
We don’t have a coat closet, but we do have a small closet in our kitchen that I would rather be extra storage for kitchen stuff.
We have what some people would call a walk-in closet in our bedroom, with maybe 6 or so feet of space on each side, plus a shoe holder at the end for some of my shoes.
My husband insists on hanging many of his off-season clothes in closets.
We have 4 bedrooms and 2 people, so maybe closets aren’t the problem

Oh…total closet space?

2 walk in closets in the master.
1 large closet in each of three other bedrooms.
3 linen closets
1 front all coat closet
1 mudroom closet plus hooks for coats/jackets we use often
1 large storage closet in finished basement and 2 smaller closets.

And we have a pantry closet in our kitchen.

We have LOTS of storage.

Plus we have a utility room downstairs with shelves along both long walls where we store seasonal dishes, and larger, less frequently used appliances (like the crock pot, food processor, instant pot). Easily accessible! And space for extra things like laundry detergent, paper products when they are on sale, etc.

I was just talking bedroom type closets for your main clothing items, not coats unless that’s where you keep them!

But whatever people post is fine as long as we are talking closets for your personal clothing items!

Yeah we have a coat closet in our entryway. I do get annoyed that H has so many hoodies that he hangs them all + his coats out there.

We have a large walk in closet in our master big enough that we can store pretty much all our clothes without need to change out for seasons. Three additional bedrooms with decent size closets including the old master with a walk in.
Since our kids are all on their own the closets are mostly empty.

I would really like to re do our closet space. We have the white elfa type rods, etc. that were put 22 years ago when we added on a new master suite.

We have one closet that you can walk in, but struggle to dress in. I have one side, H has the other. I also have 3 drawers in the bureau. I am a true minimalist when it comes to clothing.

Edited the title to define “closet space for clothing”

Over 30 years ago we built a home (not our current one) where the 10x5 walk in closet was built over the garage. We paid an additional $800 for an extra 10’.

Therefore the closet would extend the width of our 2 car garage. We decided to make it a 3 car garage

The workman must have been using the 2 car garage blueprint because they built it to extend all the way over the 3rd car portion.

My closet was 30’ long! I miss that thing and I know it’s what sold our house. I wish I had taken a photo of it.

Not enough!! Our house dates back to 1870 so very limited closet space. When we renovated our attic into a MBR/BA we did put in a good sized double closet and a regular sized cedar closet. Unfortunately, there wasn’t room for a walk in. As a result, I put away clothes after the season is done as I don’t have room for everything to be out. I’d love more closet space!!

Do it! Your life will be transformed to have a closet pantry in your kitchen. Make sure to outfit it to the hilt with adjustable shelving not only in the closet but on the door also. Install simple spice shelves on the door. Have a couple shelves for canned goods.

Put all daily appliances in there especially heavy ones you hate to lift.

A closet doesn’t have to be big but really is a game changer for kitchens.

In my first house we had a small u-shaped kitchen with a cabinet (floor to almost ceiling) which served as a pantry (smaller than most closets) and it made everything work. It was one of the best set-ups I ever had.

We live in a typical 70’s colonial with limited closet space. H & I share a regular closet (not walk in) with two bi-fold doors. I can hang things & put stuff on a shelf above the hangers (I’m tall enough to reach). I have shelves on the floor that hold my shoes. I laugh when I see home makeover shows with no dressers or chest of drawers in the bedroom. H & I each have one for our clothes.

The picture is a whole wall of my master bedroom. It has 4 closets. One closet is for shoes, one for the current season work clothes, one for handbags, one for sweaters. There is a walk in closet for my dresses, long and short. In the second bedroom there is another double closet for off season clothes and more handbags. I have 2 coat closets in the hall way. I live by myself.

I don’t have a dresser for my clothes. I have six drawers in my closet…and a lot of shelf space. No need for a dresser or chest of drawers.

No dresser for me either. I have drawers built in my closets.
