Long distance runners, I mean. Do they typically run 5k races, or do they do 10k races as well?

1600 and 3200 are considered long distance events for high school.

During Track seasons, races for a distance runner can include 800, 1600, and 3200 although 800 and 1600 are more middle-distance. 5k’s and the steeplechase may be available depending on your area, but where I am, there is only 1 meet including them. During Cross Country, all races are 5k’s. I’m not sure about other schools, but I haven’t heard of any 10k races in high school.

You can run 800 meters, 1600 meters, 2400 meters, and 3200 meters. This is specifically for meets. Expect to run much farther for practice – up to six or seven miles.

If you do indoor track, distances are 600, 1500 and I believe the 3000. Outdoor track is 800, 1600 and 3200. I’ve never heard of a 2400. There are also relays.

The longest events are 1600 and 3200 in my area.
