I wonder where I stand compared to many CCers when it comes to studying.

So, here are a few questions:

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

For me:

1.) I study only a tiny bit. I’ll take official practice tests here and there, but I only spend an average of 2hr preparing for each test. I never bother with review books and refuse to take any prep courses.

2.) If I choose any class to impress the colleges, it will be done with the course title. However, it is 80% personal challenge, 20% college admissions. If I hate a course, I will not take it - this explains why I didn’t bother to go on to AP Spanish after Spanish III.

3.) I rarely study for the exams - instead, I ponder on the material while doing homework and am ready for an exam at any time. This explains why I can pull the stunt of not studying at all for the finals, even in light of the fact that I often depend on them to save my grades.

4.) Definitely - although it no longer affects my grade, it is a learning experience.

5.) Grades and numbers are often inaccurate - as long as they don’t give the wrong impression on what type of person I am, it’s OK. So, while I’ll work hard to get the best grade I can get, I will not go out of my way to earn a couple extra credit points if I feel that I don’t deserve them (eg. just like how some teachers give extra credit for owning your own copy of a book).
