How much do you all study?

I wonder where I stand compared to many CCers when it comes to studying.

So, here are a few questions:

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

For me:

1.) I study only a tiny bit. I’ll take official practice tests here and there, but I only spend an average of 2hr preparing for each test. I never bother with review books and refuse to take any prep courses.

2.) If I choose any class to impress the colleges, it will be done with the course title. However, it is 80% personal challenge, 20% college admissions. If I hate a course, I will not take it - this explains why I didn’t bother to go on to AP Spanish after Spanish III.

3.) I rarely study for the exams - instead, I ponder on the material while doing homework and am ready for an exam at any time. This explains why I can pull the stunt of not studying at all for the finals, even in light of the fact that I often depend on them to save my grades.

4.) Definitely - although it no longer affects my grade, it is a learning experience.

5.) Grades and numbers are often inaccurate - as long as they don’t give the wrong impression on what type of person I am, it’s OK. So, while I’ll work hard to get the best grade I can get, I will not go out of my way to earn a couple extra credit points if I feel that I don’t deserve them (eg. just like how some teachers give extra credit for owning your own copy of a book).

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
No…haven’t be arsed into it yet…I’m going to begin in August and go through revie books and such…

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

Never, done that…I pick my classes to get away from the stupid kids…

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
Depends on the subject…If I’m pretty confident on the materials I’ll review 30 mins before I sleep and an additional 15 mins in the morning before school. If it’s something I’m iffy about it, I’ll study for about 2-3 hours on the weekend before the exams. Might be more if feel like I need it. If the exam is an essay I just don’t study at all…my writing skills aren’t going to improve with a few ours. I never had to pick between the grade and learning the subject, they go hand in hand…But after a test an I obviously don’t know a concept I’ll go back and learn it…

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

We’re not allow to see our semester exams, district policy :(

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

No.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

Never.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

No. The focus is sleeping.

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

No.

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

Sleep > All.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
Nah, I might do some problem sets from the CB book or look at a word list for about 30 mins before the test, but otherwise nothing really.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?
Never, I only do classes that I have interest in.
3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
20 mins a day for school, but about 90 mins a day (didnt stay true to this for 06 - 07 tho) for the olympiads…learning the subject and getting high grades go hand in hand for me.
4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?
after finals? Probably not. Midterm, yes.
5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
Since my school is a joke, they are rather low down the chain. I put probably 10% effort to maintain my average and devote the rest to athletics/olympiads/research/writing (fanfiction FTMFW)

1) never studyed in my life

skip to five one covers everything else

5) importance of things in order:

Friends

Tritium knight which MMORPGs do you play

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

i took it in june without really studying, just to see what i would get, but i am studying this summer. ill try to finish the blue book and the workbooks i have.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

well we dont have weighted gpas at my school. so nothing really increases my gpa. i take what i like, except for math. i dont like it but i keep taking it.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

hmm i like to get the grade, but along with getting the grade i also like to learn the stuff, especially if its an ap class, because i need to remember the information for the ap test.

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

i would look at it i guess. but if i had an A, i wouldnt study it really hard or anything.

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

somewhat important.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

I haven’t yet, but I will be taking a prep course over the summer.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

Never. No.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

Probably focused more on getting the grade. It differs in each subject.

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

No.

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

Pretty damn important.

i don’t usually study. I like to challenge myself for tests and such. Makes it more interesting.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

studied a bit for march, only got 2190. Didn’t study at all for June, think i broke 2300+ (odd)

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

i usually just pick the toughest courses in the curriculum. I try to pick some fun classes for electives

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

I have a great memory, so i can just cram 30-60 min for a test. Depends on teh class. Most of the time its for the grade. I put an honest effort into english and i like it, so that’s an exception

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

hell no

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

They’re up there, but running and friends rank higher.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
didn’t do anything
2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?
i took most of my jr and sr year classes so my transcript would look good. i would also say that if you take classes that make yourself competative, it’s not going to be a detriment to your “true eduaction”
3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
least amount possible. most of the time, none. for others, it involved only typing notes into my calculator
4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?
not a chance
5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
compared to friends and golf, grades don’t even come close

Lol…Well…I played a very unknown web based MMORPG named Tribalwars…I quit though and am waiting for a new world to open.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
barely. i’ll take like one practice test to get a feel for it, and that’s it.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?
it’s always half college, half a-class-that-won’t-be-boring.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
for tests, getting the grade. it’s usually anywhere from not at all to a couple hours the night before for the really big ones.

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?
nope

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
just one piece of the puzzle. there are definitely more important things that make me who i am.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?

I maybe studied 2 hrs before the SAT. None for the ACT. 5 or so for the SAT IIs. Though, very little effort.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?

No

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?

Zero hours

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?

Nopes

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?

Don’t really think about them

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it? i studied quite a bit for the last SATs but i haven’t gotten my scores back yet… i hardly studied for the ACTs and that kinda screwed me over…

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education? umm well i’m in IB so most of my classes are determined… i don’t have any electives, except i can choose my science and math… and i choose the stuff most related to my future major (calculus, physics)

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject? depends on the class… when it comes to spanish, english, and history i study just to get the grade because i couldn’t care less about any of them, but as long as i get an A in spanish and a b in english+history i’m satisfied… for my math and science classes i study to learn the subject, so i study alot more and i get A’s in those classes

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test? we’re not allowed to look at semester exams… and even if we were i probably wouldn’t

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
really important

More than for normal school, I feel writing is my weak point, so I’ve been studying this more than anything else

I think that those overlap, classes that I like are also those that will help me for college.

This is a good point, I think I’m more worried about getting the grade, while I should be worried about learning the subject.

It matters what the test grade was, (If it was a C or something, then yes, because I would want to know what I got wrong. If I only had a few wrong then no)

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being supremely important) I’d say 8…

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
I took a SAT prep course before the seventh grade Duke thing and that’s it so far. Studying vocabulary is BS, math is easy, and grammar is just memorizing a few rules. My essay sucks though, so I’m looking into getting some one-on-one help (for writing in general). Haven’t thought about the ACTs yet.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?
Often. GPA is weighted at my school so the classes you take matter. I’m not set in stone about it though, and I do have my limits. For example, I’d never even consider dropping an honors science elective for an AP history class. And I don’t see how it can be a detriment to my education.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
If you learn it well, won’t you get a good grade? Isn’t that the whole point? And I study enough to get the grade I want. That can range from 0 to 15 minutes in most classes to 1+ hours in history (yes, I hate history, if you couldn’t tell already).

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?
No… One because I just don’t care, and two, even if I did, the teachers look down on it as grade-whoring.

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
Very. Among the superficial things I love in life (aka excluding family, friends, etc) are my grades, my computer, and Grey’s Anatomy.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
nope. i almost got a 1900 with no studying at all. like i had the collegeboard dictionary sized study guide but i didnt even pick it up. so yeah. this time around im going to study a bit, mostly the math and some vocab, because i want to get at least a 2000.

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?
uhh never. i want to go into college with as much knowledge under my belt. the fact that it looks good on a transcript doesnt really factor into it. i just like challenging myself with honors classes, and i like science and stuff so thats why i pick those classes. but i have to take em in college anyway, so i might as well get a little intro. ive never been the slack off type of person anyway.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
never. i usually get straight A’s and ive never studied for a test. haha. i just absorb info. if im there and paying attention, i just remember it. its weird.

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?
yeah. just to see if i made stupid mistakes/what i didnt know as well as i should have.

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
umm. i dont know… pretty important but only around report card time. i wouldnt care about grades as much if colleges didnt care. but they do, so i do all the garbage im supposed to.

1) I’m probably just going to study this summer. I’m going to take a Reading & Writing evening class, and have a personal tutor for writing as well.

2) Absolutely not. I always choose the classes that I want to take, which does not always match the classes that I should take. For example, it is recommended to take 4 years of foreign language, but I only chose to take 3 because I do poorly in this subject.

3) If I get an A in the class both quarters of the semester, my grade will still be an A even if I get a C on the final exam. Usually, I don’t need to study since I have already mastered the material. But just in case, I often just skim my notes for a few hours.

4) I’m not allowed to look at it, even if I want to.

5) Grades are essential, but physical fitness and social well-being are ultimately more important.

1.) I didn’t prep at all for the regular SAT and the only practice I ever did was for one subject test, German w/ listening and that was a pretty lame effort at practicing anyway. So, no, I didn’t study for the SAT.

2.) At my school, there are college prep classes (AP, honors etc.) or gym class, so there wasn’t much choice though I did take two extra science classes senior year in order to improve class rank.

3.) I only prep for math exams significantly. All other subjects I usually spend half hour or less studying.

4.) Yes, I always need to know what parts I screwed up.

5.) They are the most important thing.

1.) Do you study for the SATs and ACTs? If so, how much effort do you put into it?
I never have before, but I am starting this summer. Actually, I am starting today :]

2.) How often do you choose classes for the sole purpose of having it look good on college and increasing your GPA? Do you do it even if it’s a detriment to your true education?
Not usually. I’ll consider it, but I will usually end up in a class that I think I will enjoy. I want to challenge myself and take the hardest load because I think that will prepare me for college more, so I do often take the hardest courses that “look good” on apps.

3.) About how long do you study for exams in each subject? Is the focus more on getting the grade or learning the subject?
For the past three years, I have basically studied on the bus for about .5hrs on the way to school with friends right before a test. I don’t study for tests typically and, if I do, it is only Spanish vocabulary.

4.) It’s right after finals, and you just found out that you got good enough of a test grade to get you a solid A in the class. Would you still go over your test?
No. Haha. It’s terrible, really. I get the grade, and I’m cool. I needed like 40% on my math final, so I put in just enough effort to keep myself at a solid A, and ended up with like C on the final. My teachers usually won’t give us the exams back anyways.

5.) How important are grades to you compared to other things?
Not very. I care about them, but there are many more important things - from friends to family to movies. Grades just happen. I like good grades, but I don’t care if I don’t get straight As. When it comes down to it, I prefer learning, and that usually means I end up with a good grade. So, I have no idea what I was talking about…
