Seeing as great American schools like Harvard and Stanford are comedically difficult to get into, how much in savings would be required for an American student to obtain a student visa to study at a school like Oxford or Cambridge?
When my daughter applied for her visa to study for 4 years at St. Andrews we simply had to state we had the money. No proof was required.
But it would be very foolish to go to all the trouble of applying, getting in, getting a visa and going over there if you didn’t have the money.
First year of tuition plus room and board. It is all spelled out on the government site if you search for Tier4 visa. We needed to provide bank statement.
“First year of tuition plus room and board”
So I’m guessing around $30-40k correct?
Yes, depending on the course (stem vs humanities).
more like $40K+ but yes. Also, you don’t necessarily have to have the $40K sitting in the bank as a lump sum, just evidence that you / your family can pay it.
Per your other post, bear in mind that there is no major/minor at Oxbridge, and there is no ‘business’ course, so if you apply to do engineering it will be 100% engineering. Your planned APs are good for that, but in addition for Oxford you would have to sit the PAT and for most Cambridge colleges you would have to sit the STEP paper (and of course you can only choose one or the other- you can’t apply to both Ox & bridge).
We did not have to supply a bank statement or any other dcoumentation.
On our financial declaration for Oxford, you had to provide evidence for coverage of first year’s fees (tuition, college fees, living expenses). We were able to satisfy that through a 529 account and submitted a statement to verify. I just looked at last year’s form, and as an alternative, you could submit a letter from a parent accepting financial responsibility, but that needed to be supplemented by a letter from the parent’s employer or bank manager stating that sufficient funds are available.
In terms of actual cost of the visa, I think it ran about $1,400 between all the fees and the payment of the NHS premium.
I want to reiterate what i said above, which is if you don’t have the money, don’t start the process, there’s no point.
We are applying now, the VISA is 348 pounds & healthcare thing is 150 pounds. You must have tuition including room & board for each month up to 9 mos which is 9135 pounds (higher if going to London) . You only need to show it the 1st hr and some countries are not required to prove it but must have proof if asked.
Health care is 150/year and all 3 or 4 years is paid at once.
