How much sleep do you need to function?

From what I can see most of you guys study nonstop and dont have much free time…so how many hours of sleep do you end up getting each night/how many hours would you ideally want???

4 hours minimum.

I need a lot of sleep. 8 or 9 hours.

you can do 2 hours if you go polyphasic. I wouldnt try it because you will end up failing the schedule in about 3 days max. It works if you can somehow adjust to it.

Ideally, 8 hours. Realistically with my schedule? I can function at 5 or 6! Four hours is definitely pushing it.

my highest nonstop studying was about 44 hours (before organic chemistry finals). lol.
I need to sleep at least 5 hours to function properly if I’m fully fit. otherwise, 15 hours.

When I went to the hospital with my dad who works 7pm-7am. I stayed up that time and then slept 10-1 and could function after that. So 3 hours for a 36-38 hour period. I’m not sure if I could do that little going to school both days though. Probably 4-6 minimum for school.

I like to get 8-10. Usually get 7 though.

I normally get 9. I have xc/track and a weight lifting class to recover from daily, so I need it… I value sleep more than homework

^Yeah I’m with Patton. I never do homework or studying past 9:00 PM, and I usually get ~8.5 hours of sleep during the school year.

I usually get 5-6 hours (and that’s ideal enough for me), but I can function on 3-4 too. However, what I mean by “function” is that I can get through the classes and generally understand what is being taught, but I’ll have trouble focusing when reading and I’ll honestly find it too hard to have a conversation with anyone. o.o

How to you guys functions with less than 6 hours of sleep? Idk about everyone else, but I have trouble staying awake in my classes with 7-8 (sometimes even with 9). I’d be out in all my classes being as sleep deprived as some of you guys, and I wouldn’t remember anything from my classes.

I need like 6-8 hours of sleep. Any less then that and I am cranky and tend to not wake up and either miss classes or the whole day.

I definitely agree. I value sleep way more than homework. I guess that’s why a lot of my grades have been mehhh. But I need mental stability, screw homework.

@Patton370, I actually don’t really know. I’ve tried sleeping for 8+ hours before but I’ve found that if I sleep for so long when the previous night was particularly sleepless, I perform worse. I think that those who are more physically active definitely feel the need for the full 8 hours more than the academically-inclined (just my opinion).

During school, about 6 hours. During summer, 11 hours.

I ideally want at least 8 hours a day.

I can run on 5 hours of sleep, but I tend to get 6 or 6.5 every night during the school year. On the rare occasions I don’t have a ton of homework, I have been known to sleep for ten hahaha.

During my sports seasons (fall and spring, possibly winter to this year), I try to get closer to 7 or 8 but fail miserably. I can’t go to sleep without finishing an assignment, I’m so OCD about that.

Ideally at least 6 hours, but I can squeak by for a few days with 3-4 hours, with short naps during homework breaks, of course. 6+ hours a night isn’t usually possible, so I’ll end up dozing during class a lot of the time :(

8 hours actually, but since I just finished freshman year, I was fine. Now going to sophomore year with 4 APs…I need to get used to 3-4 hours :(

I usually get 6-7 hours… But I’m going into junior year, and from what I hear, I’ll be getting 4-5 hours, and 6 if I’m lucky.
This is terrible for me because I need like 9 hours of sleep to function properly (I napped during class allll the time last year)
