CC fashionistas, I picked up a gorgeous black leather motorcycle jacket at Rack’s 30% off clearance sale but am having second thoughts about cutting off the tags. Is mid-fifties too old? Dread looking like mutton dressed as lamb.
Would a leather pencil skirt be a more age-appropriate way for me to wear leather?
MIL has a black leather jacket she still wears and she is 84. I have a black leather coat which only works when it is below 20 degrees, and a faux leather jacket for the 40-degree days. Agree that it really depends on the style and fit. Attach a pic in your avatar if you want more thoughts !
@sylvan8798 I am embarrassed to admit that despite multiple attempts, I have never managed to successfully change my avatar, but here is a link to a very similar jacket:
Fine at any age. Depends on the item and the person at any age.
FWIW, S’s GF’s M was rocking a black leather jacket last weekend at age 52. She looked fabulous. Admittedly, she is a former model with a figure that is beyond perfect, but still.
My black leather jacket is more like a blazer with a zipper than a motercycle jacket, but it never occurred to me that there was an age limit to wearing a leather. I’m over 60 and it’s the perfect weight for winter in Texas. Cuts the wind during recess duty.
I say yes to both the skirt and the jacket @yauponredux. But not together!
For the jacket, as you get older you have to be careful what you wear it with. Like I wouldn’t wear it with ripped jeans and a tee, but it could work well with lots of other stuff.
Absoluely no to an all leather outfit. Balance your leather with soft, textured fabrics. A leather pencil skirt (not butt hugging mini) goes well with a cashmere sweater or a tweed jacket. A moto jacket like that goes well over a soft tee (or turtleneck) paired with boucle skirt and boots.
I just wore my black leather jacket to work on Wednesday. I wore straight leg ( not quite legging) work slacks, nice dressier tee and ankle boots. I also wore a scarf. I got both complimented and “checked out” (in the way woman check each other out. Haha). No, OMG, she is too old to wear that look. And H says I look great in the jacket.
I wouldn’t wear a leather skirt with a lot of studs. But a longer, to the knee or slightly above, skirt with a conservative top would be fine.
