To all of you: I am truly sorry to hear about the deferral. However, I am wondering “what did your kid write on the essay?”…perhaps not very convincing?, a master piece?..sob story?..IF the records are stellar with high GPA and high SAT/ACT, good recommendation and essay has been done but got deferral…THEN it must be the essay that is in question. Just wondering.

Okla2012: Some were told it was solely lack of interest. Didn’t really make sense for some though. Read previous threads. Were you deferred, accepted or denied?

Bandmom123: My S was accepted and his scores were as follows: ACT not taken, SAT only 1980 (Did not study for the exam because of heavy projects/assignments for IB Program); GPA straight A from elementary school: 4.0 unweighted and graduated with IB Diploma (not all students got the diploma eventhough they were in the IB Programs). He was awarded merit money, grants and outside scholarship. Basically, free of ride to Tulane. Now, he is Sophomore in BME (honor programs gpa 3.83 cumulative). His essay back then was about his interests in research for Cochlear Implant for kids. His essay was short, concise and target oriented. In fact, when I read it, I thought it was kind of boring with no flavor at all…LOL My S was really interested in research and therefore his BME concentration is Cell and Tissue. He chose Tulane because Tulane is very good if not highly regarded Research School. And Tulane has lots of Research projects for those who love to do research not only in medical field but others as well. He applied only three colleges back then as he did not have time to mess around with filling out school apps; one was Tulane and the other two were local universities that have medical school too… All of them accepted him and he chose Tulane.

Okla2012:Well, I’m happy for your son! Maybe that is the problem here because he applied to a handful of other great schools hoping to get some scholarship monies because we can’t afford (long story) 60k a year which is around what these private schools cost these days but don’t qualify for aid. However, we really have researched the schools and tried to pick ones for good reasons such as strong programs in majors. He wrote a"want list" and Tulane was pretty much the only school which met everything on it! We just couldn’t risk only applying to TU for the reason stated above. He wrote about research too because he is interested in infectious diseases, took a class at Emory this summer in it, and wrote about how they had great research happening in that department. Plus, they r one of a few schools who have his major! Like I have stated before, he had visited TU, asked to meet advisor(who JUST started that week), did optional essay about TU and how it was a perfect match(he happens to be one of the top trumpeters in AREA and he is a jazz player, NEW ORLEANS!!!.. Get the picture
And applied for TU’s two top scholarships! I don’t know how that can be perceived as lack of interest??? I fact, he spent a lot of precious time in September planning and working on the Dean’s scholarship! He has such a good attitude about it though , because after hearing about the deferral, he still finished his essays for the Paul Tulane scholarship!

Okla2012: Well, someone said that things happen for a reason and he does have some other good schools as prospects. He couldn’t do RD on them though so we will have to wait. He has received some good offers so far, and frankly, one school in particular has really impressed us with the quality of their admissions department! Good school too and very personable! They have shown us that they WANT him! That’s a great feeling. I think some schools are missing this point too. The street goes both ways. :)

Oops, meant couldn’t do ED…

I just got my acceptance today, but it will vary person to person. Good luck!

Hey everybody. I have a quick question about the Paul Tulane Scholarship and how Tulane deals with it. I was accepted through EA and I sent in my Paul Tulane Scholarship Application by Dec 15th. However, Tulane does not currently have my updated ACT and SAT scores, which are better than the scores Tulane has. I just sent in my scores. Will Tulane see these updated/better scores and take them into consideration when determining the winners of the Paul Tulane Scholarship? Or will they discard the updated scores and use my old scores to determine my application? Thanks!

They will use the best scores you have on file at the time they evaluate your PTA application.

Thanks fallen!

Just popping in to wish everyone good luck and to say I spent the past few days eating my way through NOLA with my DH and DS, listening to great music and bringing back decadent pastries and chocolates. Will avoid the scale for a while! The Roosevelt hotel was decked out beautifully for the holiday season.

Jym–sounds like you guys had a blast! Good for you!"

Yes. Thanks. The weekend flew by too fast.

I can’t wait to visit in January!

Same! If I like it then, I will send in the deposit.

Enjoy! And come hungry:)

jym…did you stay at the Roosevelt?? we were there in April, nice right?

Yes, absolutely beautiful!! My DH is Diamond with Hilton, so we tend to stay in Hilton properties. I had originally booked the Hampton Inn on St Charles, but for the SAME PRICE (if you dont count the outrageous $42 daily parking fee for the Roosevelt) we decided to step it up and stay at the Waldorf property. Was DEFINITELY the right decision!!

we loved it too. didn’t have a car, so we didn’t have the $42 fee. i would still stay there again. when we were there, we found a $6000 Rolex in the room safe! we went down and gave it over the the head of security who found the rightful owner. the guy was so happy, he called, left us a thank you message and sent us a bottle of wine and a cheese/fruit platter. added a little extra adventure to our trip!

Wow! What a story!
