How soon will we hear about admission decision?

I know I am very late to this party, but Cheer007, I have been cheering for you, so glad to hear the good news!!

Thank you very much exlawyer mom! I am beyond excited.

So happy for you! You waited a long time for this great news and I hope that you will have a wonderful college experience–great things are worth waiting for!!

Dictionary dot com’s word for today: Crawfish. Somebody at that site must have had a great Tulane weekend!

I got called off of Tulane’s wait-list today, May 1 :)

I wonder how many others are/ will be called off…

WildcatKY - That’s great! They might announce how many got in off the wait list at some point. Eventually they report it in the Common Data Set they submit.

I assume by the smiley face you are planning to attend?

I shall absolutely be attending my dream school this fall! I’m so ecstatic!!! :)

Congrats WildcatKY! Great to hear such enthusiasm.

I am SO happy for you - congratulations! Dreams really do come true :-)

I have had a few PM’s asking what I thought about the wait list situation this year, and so here is my theory. And that is all it is, I have no special knowledge or access to inside info.

I think this year they decided that rather than risk over-enrollment, they finally realized they could get to the number they wanted (1500? that is what they keep saying) by going a little under and then selecting off the wait list until they got there. After all, to drop from about 11,300 students admitted 2 years ago to 9400 last year and now to 7500 (projected) is a big contraction. The yield isn’t likely to go up that much, so even if it inched up to 19% they would fall about 75 short, which I think is exactly what the strategy and hope was. Obviously in the case of some schools the stats quality might suffer very slightly by going to the wait list, but in Tulane’s case I don’t think that will be true. They wait list so many high achieving students, some of whom didn’t show enough interest but then come back and say “I really do want Tulane. Really really really”, I don’t think there is likely any real difference in the stats of the two types of students.

So just for context, last year they only took 15 off the wait list. In admissions-speak, that is essentially zero because there are always a few special cases. By comparison, the year before that was 105 and the year before that 132. So 15 was nothing. If I am right about the tactics being employed this year, the number will be back up. It all depends on what that yield number really was and how big they are willing to let the class get.

That is my thinking, FWIW.

Hey fallenchemist, what do you know about housing at Tulane? I’m trying to think of where to live and was wondering if I could ask you a question or two about dorms by any chance…

Question: You believe they only accepted 7500 initially ? wow, what type of acceptance rate would that be ?

Of course, but there have been past postings. See if these help, otherwise it me back on here. Others usually have the same questions.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1252966-whats-your-opinion-housing.html?highlight=housing+options</a></p>

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1077367-best-freshman-dorms-tulane.html?highlight=housing+options</a></p>

westcoast - That was a number put out there by President Cowen himself, as reported in the Hullabaloo. [Class of 2017 will be smaller, more competitive - The Tulane Hullabaloo : News](thehullabaloo.com) Assuming about 34,000 applications, which is fairly reasonable for Tulane these days, that is a 22% acceptance rate. Therefore a 20% yield would get exactly the 1500 desired, but generally Tulane’s yield should be expected to be 16-19%. So depending on where it fell this year (I am thinking probably closer to the 19% because of the selectivity initially used highly based on demonstrated interest), they would need to take anywhere from 75-300 from the list. And when I say take, I mean get them to enroll. Obviously some will decide to decline the offer even if they initially indicated they wanted to stay on the list.

Hey fallenchemist,

I read those links you sent me and was wondering -

do you have any idea which dorm house, other than Wall, would be the best for a gay person?

also, about how many students go random with choosing their dormmates?

I don’t know the answer to the last question, although certainly a fair number do. But with the popularity of Facebook and Roommate Click, and then adding in the number of people that meet their roommates during Honors Weekend, Destination Tulane, or June Orientation, I am sure the number has gotten a lot smaller.

I don’t think any particular dorm or floor is better or worse for an LGBT student. But for this I would refer you to the organization that supports these students, [Tulane University - Intercultural Life | Office of Multicultural Affairs | LGBTQ Student Life](http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/intercultural/lgbtq/index.cfm) They would have the best information.

Thanks - also, do you know which dorms are co-ed within halls, rather than single gender per floor?

I know Wall is one of them, and they rock, but are there any others like that?

It depends somewhat on the percentage of men/women that enroll. I know Monroe is theoretically gender by wing, but sometimes because of the high percentage of women in the freshman class a whole floor is female. I am not exactly sure how Sharp does it. Butler is definitely gender by floor, and of course JL is all female.

And actually I think Wall, since it is suite style, is every other suite is opposite gender. Again, that at least is the preferred set-up. Things change depending on the actual demographics.

Sharp is also gender by wing with the shorter side being male and the taller side female - at least for the last few years.

Hey Fallenchemist,

I see that a bunch of Pelicans have had the chance to register for Fall 2013 classes ([Tulane University - Class Schedule](Tulane University Schedule of Classes)).

When do you think I’ll be able to sign up for classes? I’m still waiting on my acceptance letter and all to come in the mail…
