if you watch the video and see the lamp, the fact the guy is in trouble is over the top (putting it nicely)

Ridiculous.

Absolutely ridiculous. He should have simply been told to take the lamp home. Problem solved.

Although I do wonder why he still has the lamp in his room?

Crazy! Would a booze poster be a violation?

What the heck is “alcohol paraphenalia”??? an empty beer mug? a shot glass? a blender? lol What?

If a person had their shotglass collection in their dorm room, would that be a violation? I wonder if the college’s store sells an FAU shot glass?

I like the way the school is hiding behind FERPA. The student should submit a signed release to the school giving them permission to discuss THIS (and only this) matter.

How awful that his appeal was denied. He should spend the entire alcohol awareness class asking the teacher how lamps can make you drunk. “Should I use an LED bulb to make sure I stay sober?” “Will it loosen my sense of judgement if I attach it to the Clapper?” Show it to be the farce that it is.

On top of that FAU seems to be charging a hefty fee for the room rent.

I noticed that too. The kid and the news station were a bit blasé about waving around all those numbers.

Was his hairstyle and example of a “man bun”?

Weird case, but since he did get a warning, he COULD have taken the lamp home to avoid all theses hassles.

I have to say I think the lamp is quite clever and pretty.

The lamp IS pretty! All Florida blue and nicely made. Maybe we can find out the name of the artist. I would love one with these pretty bottles (and I love the liquor too). It is French ginger liquor with cognac. Just the thing if your throat feels scratchy.

Boca is a pricey area, and FAU doesn’t have much space left to expand into. There is lots of off-campus housing going up nearby, also pricey.

FAU just can’t catch a break when it comes to bad publicity the last couple of years.

It is such a cute little campus - we live about 2 minutes away. I think they have gone through some growing pains.

I agree with @SouthFloridaMom9. There are a lot of good things going on at FAU - med school, stadium, new president. But this is clearly an overzealous RA and an administrator who missed a chance to right something silly.

The lamp is pretty. I hope the school reverses itself on this.

When I watched the video linked above, I had a sponsor message to sit through first - from Jacob Creek winery. Just curious to know if anyone else had the same…targeted advertising?

Unless there is much more to the story, as told, it is ridiculous.
Saw some undies by a major brand at Notdstrom - with pot leaves design all over them! You know, if a college kid buys them, someone might see them on the kid or in his laundry basket! Drug paraphernalia! Drug propaganda! The RA should do a thorough wedgie check to make sure none of those underpants made it into the dorm!

Weird thing. I was in college when/where drinking was legal at age 18. Our bookstore sold the usual shot glasses, tumblers, and pewter mugs with school logos on them. Most of the kids who bought this “alcohol paraphernalia” drank rarely to never.

Me, I drank. The only glasses I owned were water glasses that came with my room. If we had hard liquor we used those or drank from the bottle. Mostly we drank beer from the can.

This paraphernalia thing is weird. My DAD had paraphernalia. Like seltzer bottles, shakers, crystal bottles with tin labels naming the type of liquor you were supposed to fill them with: gin, vodka, etc. Monogrammed shot glasses that matched his cigarette boxes. Monogrammed highball glasses. Serving trays with beer logos printed on the bottom. Stuff from the 50s and 60s. I have a corkscrew.

A lamp. Psssh.

The original video link did not play well with my security software due to add ons. I think this is the same story:

This seems unfair. I bet the student will get in further trouble for discussing the moderator’s actions. I mean the school’s actions.
