When I go to college (not to sound high schoolish) I want to have friends like most people, the college I plan to go to is on the east coast and I live in the midwest, AND i don’t have any family there, so i kind of need some.

But I have a horrible time with introducing myself to people and I can be bubbly it’s just…well I don’t know how to put this but how can I be outgoing and not have it come off as fake. I mean if a girl came up to you and started talking and was just being friendly. would you be like “get away from me…why is she talking to me?”

That’s why I’m so shy about going up to people, because I think the person is not going to want to talk to and I 've had that experience before and it makes you feel feel stupid afterward, so I’m pretty reserved.

I think the most important thing for you to remember is…everyone is in the same boat. Going away for the first time can be scary and intimidating and most will feel that. You will meet and make so many friends while moving in and at all your orientation events. Good luck. I know you will be just fine and make the best friends of your life!

No, as long as she wasn’t trying to get me to sign my name on a dotted line, ask for donations, or aggressivley yell and force her opinions onto me–I would still talk to her. And quite honestly, I don’t think you would do any of the mentioned things, just say hi and start talking!

Are you kidding? If a girl initiated conversation with me that’d be awesome. One of my best female friends and my girlfriend both often initiated conversation with me when we first met each other.

I’m not even joking, I think you being a bit outgoing, especially to guys will help you a lot.

And finally, if the person doesn’t want to talk, oh well that’s their loss. You’d be surprised how many people will be at your school looking to make a few friends.

IluvB- Reserve, shy people seem to believe people are judging them and their actions.
Honestly, everyone is just trying to make a connection to start a simple conversation.
Coming on too strong, too loud, too fake, too bubbly, too weird is a crowd and conversation killer.
A sure way to have at least one conversation is to introduce yourself to whoever is hosting the party/event.
Relax, it’s easy to make friends and it’s fun.

“I mean if a girl came up to you and started talking and was just being friendly. would you be like “get away from me…why is she talking to me?””

No, you’re wrong. Everyone (atleast all freshmen) are new there, and looking to make friends. Even people who aren’t aren’t going to blow you off unless they are really busy and have to get somewhere, or they’re just unfriendly. That is actually a good way to meet people and make friends, just start talking to people you see around you.

I also will be going off to college this fall. I agree with the posters, to meet others you musst talk as anyone else. Yes you should expect to be ignored/ pushed away by others but that would probably be rare. Most students will also be in the same situation as you looking to meet new people.

As the poster above stated don’t pretend/ act, be yourself, etc…
