Math exam, relatively easy. She said she wanted the “first page” done by lunchtime and the rest afterwards. She put us into groups, and I got two idiots who are failing the class while I had a very high grade. They didn’t know anything, but that didn’t matter so we trudged along, but they kept asking ‘why’ and such for most of the questions and so we trudged slowly. One of them said that she would only collect the first page, as it was a two page packet with a total of four sides of questions, so apparently he said that she wanted only the first side, so I decided I could help em along a bit since getting the first sheet done would be quite easy to do within the time limit. We finished that with ample time, and then proceeded onwards to the second sheet, still part of the first ‘page’, and there were two questions that they disagreed or had no idea how to do, so we jotted down some notes for them, circled a guess, and then CIRCLED THE QUESTIONS to remind us to go back to them to redo them since we weren’t sure of them.

After that, lunchtime. So we handed it in, and I asked “So only the first page will be graded right” assuming that first page meant first sheet, and she said “yes”. She said she would grade only the first “page” and then give it back to us.

After lunch however, I was perplexed to as why I didn’t have the first page back to do the second sheet. So I went and asked her and she said that the first page included both front and back, and that the group couldn’t have it back to finish up on those two questions we disagreed on and thus wrote just some notes down for, and thus she marked them wrong, and refused to question her decision.

Now I feel this is an enormous injustice, and am her best student, and now I’m really ticked off because this will drag my average in her class into the 80’s likely, which is complete bs as I have consistently gotten 99’s for the quarter grades and was the only person to get a 100 on the midterm. How do I approach her to fix this dilemna without sounding too arrogant [as in blaming the dumb people] but still getting justice?

it’s not your partners’ fault; you should have been listening to the instructions. you also could have asked the teacher whether she meant front and back; i’m pretty sure your teacher would have been plenty willing to answer such an important question.

also, if you get 99s your grade won’t fall into 80s… are you sure you’re good at math? jk but really, don’t be such a point whore; your teachers will hate you for it and will not write you good recommendations. teachers don’t take kindly to kids who they know are more preoccupied with getting the grade rather than actually learning.

and jeez who the heck gets 100%'s in any class. any time i have an A+ in a class i use it as an opportunity to focus more on another class or just chillax. if you keep worrying about your grades so much you’re going to be one of those kids who has a nervous breakdown as soon as classes get more difficult and it’s near impossible to have a perfect grade.

I need a A+ in this class because I’m in special circumstances, but trust me I do need it, at least for this class. I meant into the 80’s for the quarter, not the year. [Other quarter grades: 99, 98] I’m not a point whore, but when I feel I have not been graded correctly to my ability, I feel that is a deep wrong that must be corrected. People deserve what their ability merits, that’s what a grade is meant to reflect.

I only read half the first paragraph (because this is ridiculous) but don’t blame anyone else cause you did poorly. It’s your grade and you should have taken care of the situation at the moment if it was necessary. You can’t expect to be babied all your life.

Also what kind of math class are you in that she lets you take test in groups? :

She was doing this to help out the idiots who were failing, to pair em with smart people to help them raise their grades. It’s statistics, which is about halfway between AP Statistics and Statistics, since my school got rid of the class but some ppl in my class are still using the class to prepare for the exam since the teacher still uses old AP Exams as her quizzes and tests. I’m taking Honors Precalculus as another math class as well, and that one I never have trouble in.

lol what does precalc have to do with anything?

idk about your school, but at mine the quarter is far from over. there’ll be more tests and I’m sure with your ~extraordinary~ abilities you’ll find a way to raise your grade.

Ok now i’m calmed down [my class was last block so I was left steaming] and I see mabye I was a little stupid in that respect, trusting someone I knew who wasn’t very qualified to be making important judgements.

What would you suggest I should do to perhaps ask her for a way to make up for that grade? She doesn’t offer very many grades during the quarter [ last quarter she had just two quizzes and one test], so any suggestions?

That was your own fault… she has no obligation of any sort to allow you to make up points. Study for your next tests and do your homework… plain and simple!

Actually I just realized that infact I the case of “page” could have been interpreted my way, but I guess it’s still partially my fault for not expecting that not everyone knows the exact definition of words;

Page: one side of a leaf of something printed or written, as a book, manuscript, or letter. [dictionary.com]

why do you “need” an A+ in the class? lol…

hopefully you’re a frosh because you’re acting incredibly immature: especially this, “I see mabye I was a little stupid in that respect, trusting someone I knew who wasn’t very qualified to be making important judgements.” how rude! so you’re going to say that your teacher is unqualified simply because she’s not allowing you to retake a test YOU messed up. bro, you’ve got some HUGE character flaws and i bet that your teachers see it. good luck trying to get good recommendations from your teachers. if you keep this attitude up you’ll be sure to tick off every teacher you have.

anyways, almost everything you’ve said in the thread makes you come off as an immature, arrogant point whore… it’s no one’s fault except your own for not clarifying that your teacher wanted you to complete front and back.

the definition right under that one is “the entire leaf of such a printed or written thing.” besides if you bring this up you will look pretty foolish. just curious, how many other people made the same mistake as you?

I wasn’t refering to my teacher, I was refering to the person who was failing the class who was my group partner. My group was situated at the other side of the room, and she had a quiet voice, so I simply assumed my partner was right.

I do think it sounds unfair. If this happened to me, I’d be upset, since it wasn’t my fault after all, and I’m perfectly capable of answering all the questions. However, you have to know that when you work with people who don’t understand the material as well as you, you ALWAYS do everything individually first and check at the end–and if you don’t get the same answer, then you can spend time discussing it since at least you’re done.

Also, I don’t think you have a great grasp of the material. Otherwise, why would you just jot down notes rather than what you know for sure 100%?

You can’t blame your partners for it because everyone else had “idiot” partners. If your so worried about your grade, then why didn’t you just do it your way so you could get it done right and on time? Sure, it’s great that you’re trying to help them understand, but couldn’t you have explained it later?
^ thats what you should have done. It’s also not your job to teach them how to do it.

When I was reading your post, I had to keep making sure that this was in regards to an exam…because your actions definitely made it seem like it was a little worksheet (ie. teaching others during the exam??). For someone who insists on this “A+” I would expect that you protect your exam grade. Except instead you decided to be distracted by others, regardless of intelligence level, and failed.

You can go talk to the teacher if you want, about your situation, but do not confront her and insist upon a retest. If she wants to, she will tell you herself that she can give you another chance. I don’t think its worth damaging a relationship with a teacher by going ballistic on them…because quite frankly, the only person at fault here is you. Please don’t try to externalize your problems upon your group members/teacher. For someone as talented as you in math, you really shouldve just gone ahead with the test and answered the questions.

We are assessing him from an outside standpoint. Given that someone wants an A+ average, and if the circumstances were to happen to us, I think we’d view this situation differently.

You bring up a very valid point lugubrious. I’m sorry that the OP made the mistake that he did (one of the top math kids in our grade — does well on USAMO/Putnam — pulled something like that before, only it was an individual test and he forgot the last two pages = 60% on test). Just don’t do any insisting, be polite, and see what the teacher can do. If you really don’t care about hurting your relationship with the teacher…then by all means just go bring up the parent/lawyer threat.
