I have went from Charlottesville to VT before, just this summer to visit my boyfriend who was doing research there over the summer :)

Anyways. So what I did was to take the free trolley( or taxi in my case since it was too early) to the greyhound station, which is also very close to the Amtrak station. You take the greyhound to Roanoke. The place where you get off is also the place where you can take the SmartWay bus. The SmartWay bus is $4, but you must have them all in $1 bills. The machine DOES NOT take $5. Also be aware, that the SmartWay bus does not run on Sundays. So if you are leaving on Sunday, you will have to find some other means to get to Roanoke. I have never tried taking Amtrak, but I believe the closest Amtrak station is pretty far away.

the smartway bus comes about every half hour or hour, i forgot. you can check on the website for a more detailed schedule. Just make sure your timing works out for the trip Hope this helps
