How to get scholarships from Syracuse as an international student?

Hi, I’ve been admitted to SU School of Architecture. It’s my first choice but the cost is really high. What’s worse, SU just cuts scholarships to intl undergs this year due to the financial crisis!(I got to know this after I got my admission!!!) However, a current student at SU SOA encouraged me to negotiate with the school officer. And I tried to do so, but have not succeeded yet. Therefore, I post my question here, hoping you could be so kind me to help me. Thank you!

Other schools on my list.
University of Cincinnati (B.S. in Interior Design)—the cost is rather low
RISD (intended to study Architecture as well)—almost as expensive as Syracuse
Tulane (five-year M.Arch)—affordable with the 24K scholarship
Drexel (admitted as B.S. in Graphic Design, intended to change to B.S. in Interior Design)—with 22K scholarship
Bard College (don’t know what to study, lol)—25K scholarship

Do you think of other school from the list as a good choice? Any information is welcome!

Again, thank you all!

The following is my fist negotiation letter with the officer, which did not mention the financial problem of my family, but emphasizing the ‘merit’ aspect.

Dear Syracuse Staff

Greetings.
I am XXX, an admitted international student.

Thank you for offering me admission to Syracuse School of Architecture.
I am eager to start studying architecture at SU and Honors Program.

However, when I applied for the school, I was expecting to get merit-based scholarship SU offers to student with outstanding academic achievement. (I have SAT score of 2250, TOEFL score of 102, and rank 10 in a class of 300. And if necessary, you could also review my portfolio)

Can you review my application documents again and grant me any scholarship the school offers? I got to know that SU cut the international scholarships due to the financial crisis. However, I got this sad news even after I got my admission. I believe there might still be some scholarship opportunities available even to international students.

Syracuse University School of Architecture is definitely my first choice. But my parents are not sure about supporting me for five years. If the situation doesn’t work out well, I might have to enroll Tulane univerity which offers me $120,000 amount of scholarship or University of Cincinnati which is much more affordable. But I sincerely desire to attend Syracuse university because I believe you have better option for my education than the other universities I’ve mentioned. I promise to enroll as long as I can afford.

My personal information is:
XXX
XXX

Thank you for reading my letter and please help me ensue qualified education in Syracuse University.

Sincerely,
XXX

And the following is the reply from the office. It provides an engine. However, I would not post my question here if it helps.

I think my present task is to advise the office to make an exception for me. Right?

Dear XXX

Congratulations on your acceptance into Syracuse University!

If a student qualified for an SU merit, it would be determined through an admissions review. It is correct that international students are not being offered SU merit scholarships beginning this 09/10 academic year.

I understand the decision your family is currently faced with making regarding your education. I recommend, you visit our website (listed in my signature below), which provides information on external scholarships; explains how to conduct a scholarship search; and where you can sign up for the scholarship listserv. For information on financial aid for international students you can visit our webpage [SU- International Students](Cost of attendance for international students - Syracuse.edu).

LYX from CUUS? haha…
Well, if u r seeking some outside scholarship~ then try Fastweb~might be helpful…

Surprised and glad to see you, nicolaai…^^
Thank you for the link.

the only problem i can see is that a lot of external deadlines have already past, but good luck… hope you can find a way to attend

Thanks, I’ll still try negotiating with the university…

Syracuse U is well-known for RARELY offering merit scholarships to international students. I guess another way out is to ace in academics and earn a scholarship when you’re studying in SU.

To Azawindam

Yes, I’ve heard about that. So here is a plan: the first year I will pay the cost fully (our family could afford that), and in the next four years, I exert my utmost to get scholarships? (sure, I will do more research on the scholarship information before making my decision). Thank you~!

Lyx, good luck on your studies in Syracuse University. Though it is a challenge to get a scholarship, we acknowledge that every college has intense competition among the students. Have fun, first of all!

Azawindam, you’re a really kind man. (however, I’ve explored the SU website… it seems not to have many scholarship opportunities… Any way, I’ll still try my best before MAY.1)…
Thanks for your wishes!
