One of my teachers gave me an F on an assignment because he thought another student and I cheated on an assignment and turned the same one in–in reality, we worked together and the student simply wrote down what I wrote down. I don’t want to complain and make a fuss, since that would probably make him even more mad, but I do want him to know that I am capable of completing a large assignment on my own. Also, I don’t want to jeopardize my chances of getting a good college recommendation from my other teachers. So in general, I was wondering, what are ways that you impress teachers? It is with more work, better grades, larger assignments, more participation, or simply “sucking up”? Though idk if that last one will work, he’s pretty fickle. Thank you!

Maybe with some shallower teachers, “sucking up” might work, but the most basic way to impress a teacher is really just through hard work, and showing that you love learning, which usually leads to high grades.

With regards to your particular situation, however, I think it depends on what your school’s policy on students working together on an assignment is. If it was not a group assignment and was supposed to be completed by oneself, then allowing another student to copy your work, or at least your ideas, could be considered a form of plagiarism. I’m a bit confused as to exactly what happened, but I think unless the assignment was intended to be worked on as a group, you should not complain. You could explain the situation to him, if he doesn’t understand it, but I would do it in more of an apologetic way, not as a complaint. Hope this helps!

I was in a similar situation last year where a friend asked me a question in the middle of the midterm and even though I didn’t answer, the teacher saw our exchange and got pretty mad. I couldn’t explain without throwing my friend under the bus, but I got back on her good side by being a hard worker in her class. I think you should try to explain the situation as you apologize, that would be a good way to get back on his good side. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, then just try to work extra hard in this class for the next few months to try and make up for it.
Good luck!!
