I am a sophomore in Sharif university tehran Iran.
I study chemistry and I like the subject, but i dont
study enough!!!
i have 2.9 GPA.
I am totally hopeless.
i always liked to pursue a phd in chemistry in USA.
AND become a professor and a good scientist.
but I dont study enough,I feel my self unathentic.
I feel my studies are pointless and useless to be a scientist.
I dont know why!!
I am recieving negative responses frome professors.
I dont know what to do.
I cant believe reading books is science!!
I dont know why but I feel the atomosphere is not scientific here!
the thing that matter is gpa not scientific inquiry.
i know that these thoughts are ruining my science career.
but i dont know how to avoid them and start to study hard enough.
i feel so depressed . any idea.??? how to solve this problem???
It sounds to me that you might be suffering from depression. This is a medical condition which may be a bit complex to fully understand, but appears to be largely based on slight chemical imbalance in the nervous system and brain. It is very common in the US, and I expect that it is probably very common everywhere else in the world also.
I don’t know anything at all about the health care system in Iran. If you were in North America (whether the US or Canada) I would strongly encourage you to get appropriate medical treatment. The medical profession has gotten a LOT better at dealing with depression over the past few years. Frequently this requires medications, and the medications can take a while to get exactly right. I expect that the same treatments are probably available in Iran.
Regarding a “scientific” atmosphere: Undergraduate education largely consists of understanding work that has already been done by others. Thus reading is going to be a big part of it. You don’t normally get into “new research” until graduate school, and this “new research” is going to be based on extending the very considerable knowledge that already exists in pretty nearly every field of science. Thus you have to understand the already existing knowledge first. Yes, this is a lot of work and does not always feel productive, but it is what you (and every other student) needs to do to get where you want to go.
In terms of “negative responses from professors”, it is hard to know whether some professors are just grumpy people, or they are trying to “test” you and see whether you are determined enough to continue working hard even if they don’t encourage you, or if something else is going on.
Well I got an F in physicsl chemsitry course and my professor told me that in front of all others ,
That some people in the world become Eibestein and some recives Fs…
then he looked at me and asked isnt that true master Eshghi(my family name)??
I think maybe it is right and i should go to psycholigist maybe i just have depression!!!
