How to survive college senior's job hunt

Hurrah, dkitty!

Congrats!!

Congrats to your S, Dkitty. It may not be perfect, but you’ve got to start somewhere.

Hurray for dkitty’s son!!

dkitty,

now you and son can breathe!

Rock, I think it depends on the company. We do a ton of training at work. We hire almost all of our people internally at entry level and promote from within. Occasionally they hire from outside, but its usually for more advanced positions and even them I think internally all has the edge.

Were about to get two newbies on our team that are completely changing departments so this will be a whole new world to them.

dkitty - congrats on your son’s job! Even if the pay is not that great and you will still be providing some support, it is a giant step in the right direction.

fendergirl - yes, I’m sure it does depend on the company. I guess back in my day, there seemed to be more opportunities for mgmt training programs, where recent college grads were hired based on their education alone, with no expectation that they had tons of work experience. The company got to mold them into their desired worker and the graduate was paid (modestly) to learn how to work at that company. I did such a mgmt training program in banking many years ago and it set me on my career path. It was an extremely valuable experience and I wish more similar opportunities existed today.

dkitty, so glad for your son! Stepping stone to the next (better ) Job…they all say it is easier to find a job when you have a job…

DD got a job offer today. She interviewed with this company owner/government contractor in May and he told her then that he might just hire her himself. He has kept in touch all summer and today offered her a position with the company with health insurance and a small salary to hold her until a contract comes through and he can move her into a more professional job. Pretty great thing to do for my kid who needs the experience more than she needs a high salary. (Did I mention that she needs to get out a bit?)

MDMom, great, great news! So glad to hear of these kids getting jobs!

My son thinks he will be hired by Verizon. He was told all they are waiting for are the results of his background check and the approval from the regional manager. The company is the middleman and buys their products from Verizon.

This company’s phone coverage is the best in our local area and we live in a college town. The commute will only be 5 or 10 minutes one way depending on which store they have him work in. After his training is over he will earn commissions.

great news, MDmom and TonyK.

Congrats to all! Ds#1 just converted from contractor to fte and his gf is finishing her fellowship and got her job offer 2 days ago. Yay and yay

Congrats to all those getting jobs! I hope this is a sign that the market is getting a little better. Our DS1 was lucky enough to get a decent job right out of college 2 years ago, but the grant funding dried up and he’s been out of work since January. Only 2 interviews since then and no offers. Needless to say, he is beyond frustrated.

He and his gf have now decided to move to a state they both love where COL is lower and they can get a ‘fresh start’. Talk about a pit in your stomach! :frowning: Happy that he is willing to make such a change to try something new and regain some control over his situation, but like many have said, I just wish I could fast forward and know how it all works out…

Congrats to Mdmom and TonyK! Best of luck to your son 1down12go. I understand your worries, but it sounds like a good move to me.

Congrats to all! I am pleased to see that hiring may be picking up for the new grads. While the pay may not be ideal, it is moving in the right direction. Getting in the door is the first step. Hope to hear more happy outcomes!

Okay, so, new question. As I posted, my son received and accepted a job offer. Terrible pay but good experience. He just got a call from his dream job and has an interview tomorrow. What should he do if offered the dream job? He really wants it.

Take it dkitty, take it! Just know that he burned his bridge with the other company. People change their minds all the time. Good luck to him.

Dkitty - Congrats to your S. So nice to have choices! Definitely take the dream job if it becomes and option.

My S finished his summer internship last week and is now on the hunt for a permanent position. Has an interview tomorrow! Fingers crossed…

I don’t think he will burn a bridge with the other company. If offered a position for the dream job I believe he should just notify the first company that he has been presented with another opportunity that he just can’t pass up and thank them for believing in him and offering him a position. If he turns them down in a professional manner they should respect his withdrawal.
