How to tell a teacher you weren't ready to take a test?

Hi cc’ers

Sorry for the seemingly irrelevant title!

Honestly my life has been pretty terrible lately, but the one thing that has been murdering my soul is my grade in math. I recently managed to get a 57 on a test, despite the fact that I got a 95 on a quiz on the same material earlier in the month. I studied so hard, and I tried my hardest. Our teacher gave it to us in two days and in two parts, and I did really well on the first part, yet failed miserably on the 2nd. I now went from an 82 to a 75.

On the day I took the 2nd part of the test, and failed miserably, a person had broken into my house during the night, and had stolen a few of my family’s possessions during the night. I was late to school, and my teacher almost did not excuse my tardy, but was feeling somewhat nice. I was having a miserable day, and was hungry, tired, and just in an overall bad and shaken up mood after discovering someone broke into my house. My great aunt also died recently, and our family was somewhat close to her, so my life was in an overall dark place. Do you think I should let my teacher know? Should I beg her to let me do makeup work to at least bring my test grade up to a 70?

My friend from a different school said her teacher lets her make up tests that you did not get a 75+ on by doing extra textbook problems, and turning it in to make it up to a 75 or higher, depending on how many problems they do. Should I ask my teacher for this?

Under normal circumstances, “I wasn’t ready to take the test” won’t get you anywhere with me. You had the same time as everyone else, you had the same opportunities for extra help, you’ve got to learn to manage your time.

But having had someone break into your home the night before is a different matter entirely.

Absolutely let your teacher know. Stop by at the end of the day, and ask “Excuse me, Mrs. Mathteacher, could I speak to you for a minute?” And let her know what happened.

I would be very surprised if she let the grade stand.

@bjkmom I feel like she wouldn’t give me any special treatment if I told her, and she most likely would think I was making it up. She’s an extremely strict teacher, and I respect her a lot, but I am scared of her haha.

I was looking over my test, and I saw I made a few careless mistakes on the first part of it, but the second part, the day my house was broken into, I completely failed the second part, as she did not give any partial credit for this test. Would you let me retake it, or do makeup work in order to bring it to at least a 70? I knew the material, I guess I was shaken up and extremely tired from everything that was going on.

What would you do, from your perspective as a high school teacher, if I told you about what had happened?

Strict doesn’t always mean unreasonable.

I would give you a few days, then give you a makeup, just as if you were sick when I gave the test.

You’re a 15 or 16 year old kid. You were thrown off by having your home broken into. To me, a makeup sounds absolutely reasonable.

Give your teacher the benefit of the doubt. You may be surprised to find that she’s a lot more reasonable than you expect.

What do you have to lose?

Ok, thank you so much! It’s been 2 weeks since we’ve taken the test, do you think it is too late to ask? @bjkmom

It’s certainly worth a shot!

@bjkmom thank you so much for all of your advice! I will talk to her tomorrow, hopefully it goes well!

Good luck!

How did it go?

@bjkmom unfortunately my teacher was extremely busy today, as was I, so I did not have a chance to speak with her, before or after school. I’m trying to go before school tomorrow, so, again, haha wish me luck!
