I’m from a middle class family in an upperclass town with high costs of living (under 50% earning), and my mom always says how we aren’t as affluent as other families so I can’t be wasteful, etc. (typical money talks). However, maybe it is because of how I was raised, I always feel really guilty when she spends money on me, especially with academics. I feel as if I cause the entire family a financial strain because of my stupidity, and to be honest, I hate working with tutors. I never leave with more understanding than when I came in. Yet my mom feels that this is the only way for me to pull up my grade (C+ right now).
I’m not a sappy guy with my family. Heck, the most emotionally/mentally distressful thing I ever told my parents is that I am afraid to turn on the stove because a family member burned themselves with hot oil when I was young. How do I tell my mom that I want her to stop trying to find me tutors without thinking I’m stuck-up and arrogant about my knowledge?
What’s causing you to get Cs? Lack of effort or do you find the material difficult to comprehend. What can you do to improve your grades so your parents don’t feel compelled to hire a tutor? I think that would be a good place to start.
You are fortunate that your parents value your education enough to make financial sacrifices for it. Better than the alternative.
Do you have any insight on why you don’t understand the material enough to get higher grades, or why the tutoring doesn’t help?
If your mom contacts the tutoring center at a local college, they might be able to find a student who would tutor you for lower rates than what she’s probably paying. My university does this pretty often.
Hush! Your mom knows what it is important to spend money on. She wants you to have the best chance at life, and one way to do that is to go to college. To get into a better college, you need better grades. She wants you to have a good foundation.
When you are older, you will prioritize your spending. I know people that have a lawn chair in their living room because they spend all their money on a car…but that is what they value. Your mom & dad are choosing education over going out to eat or vacation.
So either start doing better in school or listen to the tutor.
