How would I talk about my dance history?

Long story short, I’ve moved around a bunch of studios and taken several gap years for Bollywood dance. However, I’m not sure how I’d put it on a resume.

So, for grades 2 (maybe 1 or 3 as well, I forgot), 6, and 7 I was with one studio; I was with another studio in fifth grade; and I’ve been with a third studio since last year (9th grade; I plan to stay with this studio for the rest of high school). I only started competing with the third studio (part of the reason why I quit studio 1; I also had other activities that didn’t lend me the time, and the teacher didn’t really like me).

However, due to my gap years and the fact that I was with several studios, I’m not sure whether I’d put it down as “been doing Bollywood dance since 2nd grade” or “been doing competitive Bollywood dance since 9th grade.”

Which one would I put?

Actually, I’m pretty sure I did it in third grade; I remember why I quit the first time.

To me this screams essay topic. I don’t think the technical listing will be as important as how you write this on your application, as it appears to be very important to you as well as being decently unique. You’ve got time before you need to start worrying about this at all, and I would guess that writing that wouldn’t be too hard.

just mention your high school experience. Colleges don’t really care what you did before high school.
@PengsPhils‌ I don’t think that would make a good essay topic at all- you want to write something unique and fit the prompt. That doesn’t really fit any of the common app prompts. In addition, bollywood dance isn’t as uncommon as you would think.

I find that you can use the “background or story that is so central to their identity” prompt with most things if its true. For people with something unique (if it is) like this, then it’s a great fit. You can tie in a lot of good qualities colleges want to see along the way, even academics and how you handled it with dance.

But yeah if it isn’t as uncommon as I think, scratch that. From the OP it sounded like something pretty important/unique.

I agree that it would be a great essay topic. Obviously, as with all essays, you’d want to be unique and personal in the writing, but I think it would be really interesting to read about :)

I wouldn’t write an essay on this; I actually already have several topics I want to write about senior year. Bollywood is common in my area; a lot of my friends dance competitively with Bollywood or one of the Indian classical styles.
