I have a huge question going on in my mind. If I apply to a UC and get accepted, will the UC honor that acceptance if I decide to go to community college and then transfer? I am considering community college because of financial reasons. However, I do know that transferring is very competitive…HELP ME PLEASE!!!
No, you cannot defer enrollment in the UC’s. If you decide to go to a CCC, then you would have to reapply as a transfer.
The UC’s do have TAG (Transfer Guarantee) for 6 of the 9 campuses. If you meet all the requirements at your CCC, you can TAG to these UC’s: UCR/UCM/UCD/UCI/UCSB/UCSC

So what should I do???
- Run the Net Price calculators for each UC of interest. It should give an estimate of your costs to see if the UC's are viable options financially. What can you and your family afford?
Here is the NPC for UC Irvine

- If the costs look reasonable, than apply.
- If the costs are not within your means, then go the CCC route or look for other schools that are financially acceptable. High Stats will get you merit aid at many privates such as Santa Clara, LMU, Pepperdine etc...
- Have you considered some high ranking Cal states? They are about $10K/year cheaper than UC's and are academically excellent schools: SDSU/Cal Poly SLO/CSULB/CSUF/Cal Poly Pomona
If you’re dead set on a UC but can’t afford to start there, then go to community college and use TAG to guarantee a transfer. Note that Cal, UCLA, and UCSD don’t have TAG. But even if those are your top choices, you can TAG to one of the other campuses to ensure that you have a UC to transfer to.
Definitely run the net price calculators. You may be surprised at how much financial aid you actually qualify for based on your parents’ income; I certainly was. Actually the financial aid offered for the UCs I got accepted to (UCD and UCSD) made them cheaper to attend than any of the CSUs I applied to (San Jose State and San Diego State) when it was all said and done. Keep in mind that this was a few years ago though, and that it would depend a lot on your financial situation and whether you’ll be living on campus or commuting.
