I mentioned this on another thread but I figured it was worth making a stand-alone thread for.
@himom how are you guys doing? It looks like Hawaii is going to get hit.

So far, folks are just preparing as best they can and staying tuned for news. Long lines of folks buying gas and other provisions. Costco was swamped with folks buying water and other supplies. It has been overcast and the rain seems to be starting here and there. Folks are mostly pretty calm.
It looks like the Big Island will get the most of it. Stay safe, everyone.
Yeah, so far Big Island and Maui are expecting the worst damage and have shut down non-essential offices. Things can continue to change as the storm / hurricane approaches.
You sound very calm @HImom - how is your location to the path???
I’m on Oahu, not Big Island nor Maui. Panic doesn’t really help. Folks are just calm because we have been near many other storms. Can’t really dodge, so just have to sit tight and keep posted.
Schools close after today. Folks are supposed to get 3 days of provisions. That’s about it. We did get gas, batteries and some supplies.
Many have advised having a stash of smaller currency, in case of power outages. We went and did that as well.
Youngest DD is on her honeymoon on the Big Island and supposed to go to Kauai tomorrow morning. Oldest is hiking the PCT and they have had forest fires. Middle should stay home.
Your honeymooning D may be lucky and have fewer tourists to share the lovely islands with. So far, we’ve just had light random showers on Oahu, nothing out of the ordinary.
Hope the smoke doesn’t affect your oldest D, @cap.
@cap, many airlines are waiving change fees if your D wants to reschedule.
But the real question is…has Jim Cantore shown up?
Public schools closed Th & F—most are emergency shelters for storms, so that makes sense. Best for families to be together for storms anyway and all shelter/evacuate together, including families of teachers.
Safe safe @HImom!
I’ve been so wrapped up in other current events that I had no idea a hurricane was bearing down on Hawaii. It wasn’t until we were out for dinner at our local pub and one of the tv’s had on the Weather Channel that I knew anything about it.
Can I just say that naming a huricane “Lane” is like naming a hurricane “Ally.” It’s rather confusing. Lol. When I first heard it I thought “Is Hawaii in a hurricane lane? And what exactly is a hurricane lane?” Maybe it’s just me? :))
I have a brother in law named Lane. I felt like asking him to knock it off, then thought better of it.
Thanks for all the good thoughts and wishes. Everyone is preparing as best they can, while remaining calm.
Our GFS model is consistently showing the eye passing over Kahoolawe and into Wailea, where it comes to a dead stop and turns west while dying out. Note that the storm is forecast to weaken significantly between now and then.
Edit: this is only one model. Others have the eye staying far away from all the islands.
Best wishes. Went through Tampa’s Irma experience and even a near brush created a lot of inconveniences. Changed TV providers and now get the Weather Channel. They said 14 days of water et al today for any aftermath. The actual storm may not be as bad as shortages and cleanup later. We noticed some bare shelves for quite a bit longer than I expected- and Florida is only a peninsula, not a far off island area. Too late now to get gas/water. We filled all sorts of containers with water and filled bathtubs for flushing/bathing if needed- that can be done. We were drinking the container water a long time after (some was frozen in case of a power outage).
