<p>And that doesn’t mean it’s right. Look, I can tell a Jewish joke because I’m Jewish. You? You can’t. Once your people have gone through thousands of years of prejudice and and discrimination and forced expulsions and torture and pogroms and the worst genocide in human history then you are qualified to make a judgment call here. Otherwise, I think I get to be the one to say it’s NOT OK. </p>

Look, Jews have survived numerous attempts to wipe them out, faced massive discrimination, and yet still succeed at incredibly high levels at least in part because of our cultural values. It’s not genetic; it’s cultural, but I don’t think it’s so off-the-wall for people to recognize Jewish success in the face of a massive uphill climb. I think you’re mistaking pride in being Jewish for believing Jews are truly superior. Nevertheless, I’m sure there are some Jews who believe themselves superior–just as there are people of EVERY race who believe themselves superior. That being said, antisemitism is NOT an “equally wrong” mindset. Singling out one group for discrimination–especially considering Jewish history–is WAY worse than believing your own group superior, and thereby implicitly discriminating against every other group. Can you see the distinction?</p>

<p>think about it this way: if your comments had gone reported, you could have been suspended(depending on the joke, but im guessing it was bad if it caused this problem). Although I agree that jokes don’t necessarily make you antisemitic, they’re definitely not appropriate for a classroom setting and they ARE a reason for you to be suspended. </p>
<p>While suspended, you could miss tests or other assignments in MULTIPLE classes, leading to ZEROES(if your school follows common suspension principle) and a suspension could go on your transcript.

<p>Ok, sorry, meteman, because whether I said “being Jewish” or “Judaism” was definitely the point of what I was trying to convey.</p>
<p>I do think the teacher was being a little harsh. I don’t think that making a racial joke is anywhere close to being racist (considering most jokes tend to be making fun of the stereotype and not the real people, at least as far as I see it). The teacher was being oversensitive. Of course this is all under the assumption that your not actually racist in any way like you said, because then they have every right to be very strongly offended. I don’t have an issue when I hear a black joke from people when either I know they’re not racist, or when it’s being told in a jokingly manner, but when the KKK-supporting rednecks in my school start making racist jokes and comments, then yes, It"s definitely a problem. But it’s pretty easy to tell when someone’s joking around, or when they actually are racist.</p>
<p>However I also don’t think it’s right to feel any sense of remorse just because you said it around a Jewish person, because that’s like saying it’s okay unless a Jew is around, which seems somewhat racist in itself. If you thought the joke was uncalled for despite the fact that your teacher was around, then apologize for making the joke, otherwise just apologize for hurting their feelings and for the misunderstanding that occurred.</p>
<p>I don’t think you deserved a lower grade, but maybe some sort of punishment wouldn’t necessarily of been uncalled for. For instance, they could of made you write non-credit essay over respect and tactfulness like my English teacher made me after crudely insulting a kid who was a jerk to the drama club.</p>
<p>If you offended your teacher, then he/she deserves an apology.</p>
<p>You are also in the right to ask your teacher what you didn’t do well on the essay, and what you could do to do better (subjective or not, if he had a legitimate reason to give you a lower grade on your essays, he should be able to articulate his reasoning).</p>
<p>You don’t even know how to capitalize properly, which is something you should have learned years ago, so you’re not even close to earning an A.</p>
