I am in shock-orlando terror attack

I wonder if it will come out later that the club had exceeded the occupancy limit. The club was reported to be fairly small. Has anyone heard of the off duty police officer called for backup before engaging? So many questions at this point.

The latest on the guy arrested in Los Angeles.

No connection to Orlando, it seems. A very different sort of despicable person.

@MaineLonghorn -
This hopefully will be something you will not need, but in some cases there can be emergency evaluations/hearings for someone being temporarily incompetent, and a guardian (like a parent) appointed. However, in some cases, by the time the process has been completed, the person may no longer be incompetent. But in some cases, separate from, but related to, HIPAA that can bee a helpful resource/option.

From a former coworker of the gunman (not yet confirmed by other coworkers):

One of Mr. Mateen’s former co-workers said in an interview on Sunday that he had expressed concerns about the man’s demeanor when they both worked as security guards assigned to PGA Village, a resort in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

“He talked about killing people all the time,” the former co-worker, Daniel Gilroy, said.

As @carolinamom2boys says, HIPAA bars a healthcare provider from even acknowledging a patient is being treacted at all, which does make this type of event very difficult. I’m so glad the hospital CEO recognized this and that the state and federal authorities worked something out.

This has all been too painful. I finally had to turn off the tv. It was just all too much.

As a nurse, I hear you, but I know the realities of taking care of a patient in the hospital with the family at bedside. “What is that you are doing?” “Oh, I am giving him morphine in his IV for pain.” “What is that medicine you are giving him?” “Well, it’s an antiviral.” “Antiviral? Why are you giving him an antiviral when he was shot?” “Well, it’s for HIV patients.” “WHAAAAAT?” Or alternatively, “I’m sorry. I can’t tell you what medicine this is.” “WHY NOT? I have a RIGHT to know!”

I have to think of this situation a lot where I work. We have a lot of HIV positive patients, and they are coming in for a colonoscopy. And the patient is fine with the family member hearing the results of the colonoscopy or endoscopy. But we have to guard their other information very tightly, and you would not believe the gall of family and friends who try to pull out the charts and read the information. It can be a very delicate balancing act.

I also work in healthcare @Nrdsb4 , so I completely understand the ramifications of disclosing information. That’s why I was wondering if they stipulated what type of info could be released .

No, but the problem starts when some don’t differentiate between Islamic terrorists and Islam. When a Christian nutjob shoots up a Planned Parenthood (aka radical Christian terrorism), that is hardly reflective of what Christianity is.

I just wish we would really go after the isis supporters. We are fighting a one way religious war. Time for us to stand and protect each other first. Time for us to wake up, radical Islam hates everything we stand for and will stop at nothing. Stop blaming other political parties and thinking we can reason our ways with these extremists.

I had to leave for a while and I’ve skimmed all the posts but I don’t think anyone mentioned one of the double whammies of this situation… it is likely that many of these men and women were not “out” to their families. I know many Latino/as who are not out to their families because they would be rejected.

I can’t imagine having your family essentially find out your sexual identity through a horrible event like this. (Of course, I’m sure there are many, many straight people there, but the assumption will be that an individual was LGBTQ+ if s/he was there.)

@romanigypsyeyes, good point, and not one I would have thought of.

@nrdsb4 it didn’t occur to me until I saw the HIPAA discussion. I have mixed feelings about waiving HIPAA for that very reason (though I absolutely see why many people would like them waived right now).

@romanigypsyeyes :
That is a good point, I didn’t think about that, that many of those in the club may not want their families to know (as sad as that is, it says a lot about homophobia and the damage it does to people), that they don’t want their names released because it would out them. Though I don’t know about Orlando, but many clubs in NYC that are by reputation gay clubs often have a lot of straight people going there, sometimes outnumbering the gay clientele, so being at such a place might not necessarily mean someone was gay, unlike it would have been 20 years ago.

Yes… as I said, I’m sure there were many straight people there but the assumption will be LGBTQ+.

I used to go to a men’s club with my girlfriends when I was in my 20s. The absolute best place to party and dance, with the added bonus of not getting hit on.

Pulse is an 18+ club (I googled it) after seeing the photos on the web site I could see why some young adults might not want their parents to know they were there regardless of their orientation.

@romanigypsyeyes Maybe this is wishful thinking, but maybe the tragedy and near loss of family members would make people revise their views on things.

If anyone knows people affected by this awful event, please let them know that FL psychologists are ready and able to be of assistance. Have them contact the FL Psychological Association, the Red Cross, or Dr. David Romano, who is the Disaster Response Chair. Or PM me.

@jym626 I will be at the SF pride parade - nothing will keep us away! I think it will be the largest ever in SF - with love and support for Pulse/Orlando/LGBTQ! Fear can’t win, I hope you go and have a beautiful day!

@infinityman you’d hope… but I know of families who would prefer their kids dead than gay. Even in the year 2016.
