With an automatic weapon, you can fire off a LOT of shots in a very short period of time. At a crowded gathering where people are unarmed and unguarded, they are NOT expecting anyone to be attacking them. Have read that the place was small and very crowded. I can see how a lot of people could be shot/killed quickly.

With the type of weapon no person needs for hunting, a type of weapon meant to be very efficient at killing humans. X(
@partyof5 - my H read that 1/3 of the occupants were killed or injured. There were only 25 - 30 people alive when the police stormed in at 5 AM. The shooter went in just after 2 AM. It was crowded, he had an assault rifle of some type and lots of ammo. It’s just an awful combination.
The idea of “rushing the shooter” is a nice idea, but it rarely works in reality. It worked on the Brussels to Paris train because the gun was jammed. It worked against the shooter of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords because the shooter was a complete wackadoodle who luckily had not planned as well as this one or others did. When you have someone with murderous intent and cold logic, the outcome is not good. He had tried to target one other gay club in Orlando too.
Brazil is probably the most dangerous place in the world to be LGBT. Not a lot of Muslims in Brazil…
That really wasn’t why I shared the news link. It was to show this guy was just pretty intolerant and hateful of most people, although he chose to take this particular horrendous action against the LGBT community. Sounds like he could have just as easily attacked a gathering of blacks, Jews, or women, if he was so vocal about those groups, too.
At any rate, someone tried to ‘say something’ (as is often advised). It will be interesting to learn down the line how many other people knew he was a lone, loose cannon waiting to explode - we’ve now heard from his ex-wife, former co-worker and father. It’s not even been 24 hours - my bet is other people with insight into his psyche will step forward. And his poor kid, growing up with the stigma of having his father commit the largest mass shooting in the U.S. (until the next one comes along).
It has been confirmed that Eddie Justice, the man who was texting his mom while hiding in the bathroom, is among the dead.

Although not yet on the printed list of victims, the news this morning reported that Christtopher “Drew” Leinonen, son of Christine Leinonen, who was interviewed with the compelling plea that “we just all get along”, is among the dead.
Well, this is inconsistent. ABC said he was among the dead, but she is being interviewed on NBC and she is saying he is still unaccounted for. So agonizing. He is her only child.
The list of the dead has more than tripled since I looked last night.
The FBI is in a no win situation. They “dropped the ball” on this guy. So if they crack down and jail others under surveillance there will be cries of racial profiling, harassment, violations of freedom of speech etc.
NBC (if this is accurate) is saying 49 of the 50 victims have been identified but they are attempting to contact family before releasing names.
The shooters father is a nut case who supports the Afghan Taliban.
teriwtt , yes I read about his co worker who filed complaints on him and he said flat out that because of the killers background the company did not want to terminate his employment, so he quit rather than be exposed to working with a person like him.

“this is shocking and sad and I am at a loss for words” - not “shocking and sad” in my eyes, but rather “very predictable and sad” and will continue, since the actions are the opposite of what they should be if everybody in a world is honest about the goal of stopping this from happening over and over…but very few people are openly honest…well, another consequence of PC. PC is much more important now than the human lives, I guess…
