I am stuck in a pretty hard place- Please Help!!

Hello,

I am a high school senior stuck in a very hard spot. I am trying to decide between two schools, Case Western and The University of the Pacific. Now usually Case Western(USnews 41) would always edge out Pacific(USnews 96) considering it is ranked higher overall and has a higher ranked undergrad business program.

The problem is my love for debate. From what I hear, Case western’s debate program is hurting pretty badly and U of P has a prosperous debate program. I have been recruited pretty heavily to come debate for the University of the Pacific and they have even given me a very large debate scholarship that nearly transfers into a full ride. Now with that said Case western gave me a decent F.A. package with Grants from Case that nearly cancel out the scholarship I received from Pacific.

So right now the debate program and money looks better coming from Pacific, but a couple things still sit in my head. A. College is supposed to be an investment, so isnt the extra cost from case going to save me money in the long run. B. I plan on transferring into a high ranked school after my first or second year in college and C. If the transfer does not work out I have to consider my chances of getting into a top tier law school. So will the large difference in ranking/name recognition harm my chances of getting into a top tier law school?

Thank you so much, this is a large dilemma for both myself and my family.

If you are going to go to law school you need to spend as little money as possible for your undergraduate education so you have something left to pay for law school. You also need to take out as few loans as possible for the same reason.

To get into law school you need good grades, good recommendations, and good LSATs. You can get those three at any college/university.

I think that you really like U of the Pacific better. Go there. Be happy. Don’t obsess over the difference between #41 and #96 out of something like 3,000 colleges and universities in the USA.

Cw has a top moot court “team” that went to switerland 2 yrs ago for a international.
I know friends who have changed majors a few times, so if you are pretty confident on going to law school, go where the best aid is.
The best way to cut costs if your going to law school is go somewhere that offers a 3 and 3 law program, like marquette.
I sort of understand your debate situation, b/c I’m playing soccer in college, and have to decide if I want to start and make an impact immediatly, or play for a strong team and sit for a year or two.
Go where you can see yourself going, which school is the best overall fit and where you’ll have fun
