I did something crazy....

and applied for a job at a new company, after 15 years at mine. It’s probably a long shot, as I don’t really feel qualified for it, but it looked like such an amazing position that I felt as though I had to take a chance on it. It was nerve wracking hitting submit.

I’ll never understand how people can change jobs so often (voluntarily!)

Good for you! You have excellent experience…and at least part of an advanced degree, right? You never know. Switching companies is not a bad thing.

Going on interviews every so often is a good thing too…keeps you in the swing of things.

Plus, you may get a different “value” of your worth!

Good luck! I hope this is a great experience!

Yep, part of an advanced degree. My class this semester is kicking my @ already, and it’s only been a week. Ugh!!!

We shall see. I don’t have any of the expertise in the field (type of company) that the job is in, and I think that might be a big thing for them, as it was a manager role… But I had most of the other things, so I figured I’d try for it. Can’t hurt.

Way to go! Good luck!

@fendergirl - good for you! I wish you luck.

I did that once. Absolutely did not qualify. Got an interview. Got the job! I was told “we thought knew what we wanted - then we saw your resume, and met you. THAT’S what we wanted!” Stayed for 8 years until they closed shop. Still friends with the owner. My favorite job ever!

YES! It’s healthy to try new things and broaden your horizons. Keeps Alzheimer’s at bay, and your resume sharp. Good luck. And congratulations on that first step - hitting the submit button. If there is a next time, it will be much easier!

Most job postings list the traits of the “ideal” candidate. Many positions are filled with hires that don’t meet all the criteria.

Kudos for taking the step of submitting your resume!

Good luck!!

Good luck to you, fendergirl!!

Fingers and toes crossed!!! Good luck!

Good luck! Kudos to you!

Good luck!

It’s not crazy to apply for a position at a different company after 15 years at your current company. One possible benefit is that it might make you realize how good you have it with your current employer.

As for those who change jobs many timers, it is often due to the financials of their current and past employers. Shockingly true for engineers who frequently experience lay-offs & closures due to economic reasons.

Good for you to try to get out of your comfort zone @fendergirl . Good luck to you, keep us posted.

I didn 't get the job. (Nor an Interview). :frowning:

Better luck next time, I suppose.

But you can’t get a job you don’t apply for. Congratulations for trying!

Now that there are no longer the retirement plans of the past, there is probably little down side to moving to a different employer. Good Luck!

@fendergirl:

OP: There are certain professions where changing employers is commonplace. Often these switches involve very substantial pay increases.

Common in the tech/CS sector as well as with respect to biglaw firms & with respect to accounting firms.

Well, I didn’t get the job I originally posted about… however, I did get another one! It’s still with the same company, so I get to keep all my length of service and lovely benefits and such. It all went super quickly. I applied on 2/27 and got my offer on 3/16.

I’m so super excited and so super nervous!
