I don't get it. How can someone so smart do so bad

This girl is going to the same college as me. She is in NHS and all those other academic things. I am in none of them and have a way lower GPA. She scores a 1380(Overall) on her test and I scored a 1300(CR+Math). How the hell can she have such a higher GPA…I really hate HS.

On a side note, how can I get past 8’s for AP English essays. I just can’t seem to break that score. Any help?

Maybe she’s taking slacker classes? Or you’re taking too hard classes. Or, you don’t study enough as a result of football…

Maybe she
(a) works harder in high school
(b) prepared less for the SAT
(c) was sick that day
(d) had an evil proctor who accidentally gave her half the time she was supposed to have

And are you referring to unweighted GPA?

Why would you need to? Isn’t 9 the highest? And if you can get 8’s on all your AP English essays, wouldn’t that pretty much guarantee you a 5 anyway? And at that level, how can you really tell whether your essays are 8’s or 9’s? (Unless you’re finding someone else to grade for you, in which case he may have his own idiosyncracies)

Of course, but since the correlation is positive, high GPA + such an extremely low SAT score is still something unexpected…

Oh, here are another few possibilities
(e) She skipped #1 on one of the sections, answered question 2 in the slot for question 1, answered question 3 in the slot for question 2, etc…
(f) She fell asleep during the test
(g) The proctor thought she was cheating for some unknown reason and she was sent out of the room with half her test unfinished
(h) Actually, forget (g), I think they just rip up your test if they do that
(i) She has ADD or some other disability preventing her from doing well on multiple-choice tests

with regression
you will always have positive and negative residuals with a n so large as everybody who has taken the SAT in a given year

badly… .

Well, I want as much possible help as possible for the AP exam. The reason I know my score is because of my Eng class, she gives us essays to do in class from old AP tests.

I also have a little trouble with the reading on the AP exam, especially the old poems. I analyze too much and lose a lot of time.

But meh, she didn’t say anything about an evil proctor or anything like that.

This is kind of a pointless question. Good grades don’t guarantee any specific score for the SAT.

Maybe she just isn’t as good as you at taking tests, but she seems to be better at taking high school.

hmm, does she cheat? Had to ask…girls I thought were absolutely the smartest people on earth…were bringing in cheat sheets, knew questions from earlier classes. On the other hand, some girls I know act tough, etc, and the only reason they aren’t in honors classes? Not turning in homework/playing the highschool game.

umm… a 1380 isnt low… thats about 700 for both sections, which is about mid 50% range for every school, including harvard, yale, etc (granted, its the 25th percentile, but still)

to get a 9 you need “stylistc flare” in your writing. its just something innate - you cant really develop it

I think he means 1380 CR + M + W.

Wow, our AP Comp teachers give out 1 or 2 9’s per year, and no one constantly gets 8’s.

I think its funny you are worrying about breaking an 8, when I couldnt break a 6. The highest score on an essay I got all year was one 8, and she called it an 8-, cause it was OK.

Oh and guess what, got a 5.

Stop worrying, and relish in the fact that you are a good writer, or that your english teacher is grading rather easily.

Egads! A 1380!

How is that “so bad”?

460+460+460=1380
Not too good…

Is she from another country? She could have done really well on the Toefl, then…

The tests aren’t always reflective of high school performance. This especially applies if you are in all these honors courses and have gotten rusty on the subjects covered. The SAT material has a very specific style to it, and it’s almost like another grade on its own.

For example, I’d usually be in the top quartile in all my classes (all AB or IB), and I’m about one year ahead in math than most of my peers. Though, when I took the SATs, I ended up getting the lowest score out of anyone I know. I asked about 60 of my peers, and all of them had significantly higher SAT scores. That even includes the people with the 3.5 weighted GPAs. This just indicates that I suck at that test.

The same thing may be happening to her. Doing well in class and doing well on a test with many quirks are very different. It’s for that reason why colleges don’t place lots of weight on your course load and extracurricular activities also.
