I have a ~1900 SAT score. I'm doomed. Any colleges within that range?

Hi.

I got around ~1900 (forgot the exact score) the first time I took it. Obviously, I am going to take it again at shoot for a ~2100 - but for now, I’d like to know about a few colleges within my range.

SAT II - French 740
Lit - 660 (took it on a whim, will study and take it again soon)
Will take Chinese later.

ACT - will take this fall.

IGCSEs - 3A*s, 1A, 1B

Grades - decent. I’m a US citizen studying abroad, so I don’t have a GPA, but I’d say my I’m in the top 10-15%.

ECAs-
Lots of Clubs, but focused.
President of the English Society, Vice-President of the Music Society, Secretary for the French Club (2 year)…yearbook…English Editor for a magazine…student reporter for a local magazine…

Basically, all my ECAs have been related to writing/languages - which makes sense since I’m interested in Linguistics/English/Journalism.

Awards - a few Writing awards here and there, nothing too special.

Intern - local newspaper

Judging from my stats now, I’m aiming for Ithaca College, Syracuse University, Rutgers and UC Santa-Barbara. Do I have a shot?

Dream school - USC, but I’m American-born-Chinese with a crap SAT score, so I have to work on that.

Are there any colleges I should look into as well? :)

Thank you very much!
I really appreciate your help!

Perhaps something like a Skidmore.

Or a Franklin & Marshall

Or a Penn State.

Thanks!
I’ll look into those colleges.

… actually asking if any colleges in America will accept someone with a 1900 SAT score?

You’re on the right track with Ithaca and its ilk, but, uh, yeah. 1900=400 points above average. You’re OK. USC is unlikely with a 1900, but a 1900 isn’t even bad by CC standards (which, it goes without saying, are ridiculously high).

Admissions look at more than SAT/ACT scores. Keep that in mind.

With a 1900 SAT score you’re in range of most colleges. College Confidential is focused on the high-end universities for the most part so someone not knowing any better will get a skewed idea of what it takes to get into American colleges.

Use College Board site to see where your SAT fits into the average ranges of your desired colleges. I would think your list looks realistic but you’ll need some safeties. There are plenty out there with your majors.

Thank you!

I’m going to work hard on my SAT/ACT scores. I’m studying in Hong Kong, and I’m pretty much set for local universities. So regarding college in general, I’m not too worried.

Safeties - University of Montana, Marist College? If you can think of any more then I’d love to know more.

Thanks again.

UCSD
Lafayette
Clemson
Muhlenberg
Skidmore
Trinity

Just go to “SuperMatch college search.”

For UC’s, GPA counts for a relative lot. I think more than SAT’s. Do you get grades at all? Have you tried calculating your UCGPA? Do you know if you have satisfied the A-G requirements?

Santa Barbara 2010 Admitted Freshman Profile. I think 2011 may be “higher”.

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/files/santabarbara.pdf

UC San Diego
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/files/sandiego.pdf

I agree with toystoryFan in terms of the other colleges that would be good for you. I am interested in Trinity University and I know that that is one of the most beautiful campuses in the U.S. Trinity overlooks San Antonio and it is said that they have one of the best set of dorms in the nation! I would HIGHLY recommend it for you and with your stats, you should be able to get in without too much difficulty.

Don’t listen to the advice of the other posters above saying what schools to look at.

First, know what you want to major in. You don’t apply to a college just because they have a nice name, a good reputation, etc. If you want to major in something like, Languages, business, or even science, find schools that have a top 10 program for it.

Applying to your dream school is good. But only apply to one school that you’ve always wanted to get in. It might not have a good program that you might major in.

Second, your stats aren’t that bad. Your EC’s are o.k., but not the best, but you’ll have a shot at many colleges in the U.S.

I think with your current stats you can get in Rutgers and Syracuse, but UCSB might be a stretch since you are out of state. But sorry, USC will be a high reach. I know people with 2150, 3.9 GPA, captain of teams, president of student body, etc., who were not accepted into USC. You are talking about SoCal, right? It’s a really competitive school.

USC likes diversity. He may have a shot, depending on the total package.

Ithaca College - acceptance
Syracuse University - acceptance
Rutgers - acceptance
UC Santa-Barbara - possible acceptance (in-state would be rejection, but they’re killing for OOS students for financial reasons)
USC - rejection

Here are some strong schools in your range:

Occidental
Santa Clara
Loyola Marymount
Emerson
George Washington
UC Santa Cruz (great literature department)
Boston University
Penn State
UT Austin (reach)

I got a 1970 SAT. Are you saying my score was crap too? Here I was feeling all proud of myself, telling my friends and family, feeling like I could accomplish something…

but in all honesty 19-- is a good score for many colleges. Check out the College Match (or whatever its called) feature on here to find some.

And I got a 32 ACT as well, so dont feel too bad for me lol

Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate it!

I was wondering if NYU and UC San Diego would be good as well?

I lack a good SAT score - but my report card will make up for it, I hope. I managed to get a full scholarship for senior year (one of the few people in my grade).

Thank you!

NYU is definitely a reach. UCSD may take you. I’d say all of the schools you have are matches, more or less, with a potential reach being Syracuse (and USC). Look at Connecticut College.

Do I have a shot for UT Austin? My SAT score is a bit over their average, and I’m probably getting a higher score this time. Do they require SAT Subject tests? –> or if I submit them, will the scores be considered?

Thank you so much, really appreciate it!

Dont listen to most of these people. I suggest you talk to your college counselor because I know people who got into USC with a 1900(-_-…like seriously not everyone needs to have 2400s)

I know people who got into NYU with 1400s(yes people it is possible) You need to give a kick ass essay. 1900 is not bad…at all. Just because your asian doesnt put you at a disadvantage. If you think it does, don’t put down your race. Its all optional.(or if you have a asian name…then nvm…you put down your race by putting down your name)

But seriously, how you do in a one day test does not affect everything. USC came to my school on a private college visit, and he said that it does not determine everything. It is a very small factor. Don’t let people tell you not to apply. Most of the kids in here just dont want you to apply because you might be potential competition.

Think about that before you take someones advice.

You got a 1900 on the SAT? What are you worried about? I got a 1420 and got into Northeastern University with no problem. That school is very prestigious.

It’s so dumb a 1900 and your doomed?? Give me a break? I have a 1690, if you’re doomed I’m going to be a hobo on the street. What the hell is the problem on this website…I’m sick of it all. The perfect EC’s, The 4.0’s, W.T.F??

Sorry for my rant, Good Luck!
