I have a bigger problem.

I love my AP Physics C and AP Calc classes. However, my parents seem to think that they are utterly useless. They would rather I take classes that would be more “useful” to my life, such as Government or Economics. The irony of it is that I want to be a Physicist! To make it even worse, my parents continue to bug me about my wishes of becoming a Physicist, telling me that they would rather I find a more lucrative career.
It’s bugging me so much. How are you guys dealing with parents like this?

Ask how being a physicist is not “lucrative”? They can be the best paid scientists, and they work relatively comfortable hours. There’s also the potential to be well-renowned, and you don’t have to deal with horrible people or being assassinated, as you might in other careers. Anyhow, make the point that with a major in physics(assuming that’s your potential major), you could still probably end up in med school or law school if you decide not to become a physicist.
My parents do the same things, but I just tell them that they don’t have to live the next 80 years for me, and I’d rather do something that makes me happy for those years.

Actually, some of the more lucrative possibilities for physicists involve developing nuclear weapons for psychopathic dictators.

^Valid point. But, OP, don’t tell your parents that part.

Tell your parents you’d rather have a passion than a job. Don’t hate going to work everyday.

^ Probably a bad idea. What if your parents hate going to work everyday and think you are criticizing them?

Physics and Calc aren’t useful?

What world are your parents from?

Government is useful? Economics is useful? Once you’ve got down supply and demand, you’ve learned the only useful fact for the common man from econ. Government is just supreme court cases.

Physics and Calc are REAL classes as opposed to social studies BS.

If you want to be in law and work your way up to supreme court… yeah that’s government. People skills get you in politics.

This world needs more engineers :D
