It has recently come to my attention that the latest icon of masculinity ripe for the, uh . . . plucking by the gay community is . . . James Bond. 007 (think about the typography of that). Licensed to kill.

My current very favorite song ever (of the moment) is, coincidentally, “James Bond” by the Brazilian baile funk band Bonde do Role. They pronounce it in Portugese, adorably, with four syllables: JAY-mess BON-deh. The hooky chorus, which I won’t translate because (a) I don’t know all that precisely what the Brazilian slang means, and (b) what I can figure out would mostly be transcribed as asterisks by the CC software, but which anyone with some Romance-language background ought to get the gist of, goes like this:

Arriba, arriba, Ja-mes Bon-de e um biba!
Tatu, tatu, Ja-mes Bon-de da o cu’!
Ola, ola, Ja-mes Bon-de chupa rola!
Sasi sasi sasi, Ja-mes Bon-de travesti!

In that spirit, James Bond clearly belongs in the Village People.

Since they’re all (at least rumored) to be gay, and since they’re all male (and why are they called the Village People if they’re all male anyway), why not a lesbian?
