If a scholarship is necessary for affordability, indicate that you are aiming for a scholarship and use the scholarship chance to estimate it into the appropriate group below; also, for colleges that admit by major or division, consider that in chance estimate.
Assured (100% chance of admission and affordability): Auburn, UAB

Toss-up: UGA, UF, Northeastern, Boston U, Case Western
Given you have UGA, UF, NEU, and U Mich, I woudl add Iowa and Ole Miss - two of the top schools for English Lit. Given you have a limited budget and I don’t know what it is, you should apply to Bama or Auburn or UAB/UAH/USA, etc.
So you’ve run the NPC for all these above? I’d elimine Michigan - they don’t assure to meet need.
Given your list, I’d run the NPCs on less difficult privates with the major. If you give a $ amount, I might find some to meet merit.
But for example, if you can’t afford $45K, why apply to UF, etc.
So get us a $ figure - and I can fine tune for you.
A college of reference for writing is Kenyon. Run the NPC to see whether it’d be affordable for your parents.
(Each college calculates differently. Some will have you take the 5.5k loans to complete your package and some will be affordable without a loan, which is obviously better.)
Denison is also very good for writing.
“Join the mailing list” at both of these if after running the NPC you find the net price affordable. Then open the emails they send you.
Iowa would definitely be a safety but you need to apply ASAP.
Apply to honors colleges wherever that’s possible (not Kenyon or Denison, which like Vanderbilt etc are equivalent “honors” from the jump).
Btw, this podcast (“my college-bound kid”) has tons of useful info about colleges!
this episode presents Davidson and compares it to University of Richmond.
Davidson is a Southern college that meets need and it’s very good for English. You can also minor (or double major through their center for interdisciplinary studies: your core classes are the minor and you add 5 relevant courses of your choice) in Public Health.
I think you should apply to Naropa University. Look it up.
No, seriously: what do you mean you don’t know? You don’t know what to look for in colleges? Or you know exactly what you want but you just don’t know which colleges fit your criteria?
