I need help with information about Walk in Bathtubs.

My 90 year old MIL would like a walk in bathtub. It is difficult for her to get in and out of the tub, and impossible for her to take a bath which she loves. She is of sound mind, and works 4 nights a week stocking shelves at a major discount retailer because she wants to. She has recovered from cancer last year. She is an amazing lady. We would like to get her one of these tubs for her bathroom. Do any of you have any experience with them? I would love any feedback or suggestions you might have. She lives in Louisiana. Thank you for any information or advice you might have.

I have no information, but boy – that lady is my role model!!

I get spam about them, but I have no experience with them.

When I looked at one of them what concerned me was having to sit in the tub, naked and cold, while the water drained out.

they always look good but you have to get in and wait for tub to fill and wait for tub to drain when getting out. Gets cold and takes a while. Friends mom didn’t like it.

My mom loves it! Loves it!

dstark, do you know what brand of tub that your mother has?

I thought the same thing when my BIL suggested it for my parents. I take a bath a couple of nights a week and can’t imagine getting in, starting the water and waiting for it to fill up while I’m in it. Even worse would be waiting for it to drain completely before I can get out.

Here’s an article about walkin bathtubs, including info about quick drain options so that you don’t have to wait so long for the water to drain out. Maybe having a heat lamp overhead to keep one from getting chilled while the water is draining might be useful to install as well.

Silverlady, No I don’t. Sorry. It is 10 years old anyway. It was over $10,000.

When I was in Las Vegas, the Wynn spa had a walk-in soaking tub. You walked down a flight of stairs, with railing, to get into it, then stood in hot water up to your neck. No jets, just very hot water, very deep. It was wonderful. That’s my dream.

How about a walk in shower with a seat?
My neighbor has that and wouldn’t use as much water as a tub.

Two friends of mine bought a house with a walk-in tub. They are middle-aged, and they like to take baths but didn’t need the walk-in feature so eventually ripped it out. They HATED having to get in before filling it, then waiting for it to fill, and then having to sit in dirty lukewarm water while it drained. Before they ripped it out they used a step stool to go in and out, but obviously that might not work for an elderly person.

dmd77, the walk-in soaking tub sounds like heaven. I could use one of those right now. I love baths, especially in winter!

THIS: “When I looked at one of them what concerned me was having to sit in the tub, naked and cold, while the water drained out.” :frowning:

You don’t have to sit in the tub, naked and cold, while the water drains. You add a hand-held shower, you stand up, rinse off while the tub drains, then reach for your toweling bathrobe and put it on while the last few inches drain. I love hot baths; if I ever get to where I can’t get in and out, that’d be my solution.

^But you still have to be naked and cold while it fills. You could use the sprayer to “warm up” the porcelain/fiberglass before getting in and putting the plug in, but that would not take away the unpleasantness of the experience, IMO.

You can get a shower/bath combo, or a bath that has a faucet with a removable head, so the person can sit and rinse themselves off.

Some smart engineer grad needs to come up with a lock design for the walk-in tubs!

We insisted my elderly parents install one of these. My father used it every day for the last couple of years of his life and my mother continues to use it almost daily. We purchased through Costco. We found those high pressure ’ we will come to your home and deal with everything’ sales people to be rather abusive.

The tubs fill super fast and some have a heater option which will keep the water very comfortable. And, they have a rapid drain function, neither of my parents ever complained of being cold or chilled. It would be very easy to wrap a towel around your shoulders and put a rubber mat on the seat. This way you’d be warmer on the bum and upper body portions.

This tub has allowed my folks to stay in their 80 year old home. It makes bathing safe and comfortable. It alleviates many personal hygiene issues because they are at ease using the tub.

Funny–there is a banner ad right now for walk in tubs! Big Brother is here!
