I need new clothes and I hate shopping. Help!

I used to be able to go on marathon shopping excursions. Back in that era, I had very little money to spend and never bought much, but I didn’t care. It was entertainment and I liked the thrill of the bargain hunt.

Fast forward: Now I can afford to buy what I want, but my patience for shopping is virtually nil. I have to drive 40 minutes to the nearest town with any retail and even then my options are TJMaxx, Target and Kohls (none of which have clothes that suit me). When I drive to Seattle (hour and 45 minutes south), I am often overwhelmed with a combination of the traffic/driving and the selection. Add to that I want to be fashionable (in a casual way), but I am fashion challenged.

To complicate matters, I am nearly 5’9" and have a 33" inch inseam. Brick and mortar stores rarely have pants/jeans in talls. Since I like buying outfits, this is often my excuse to give up.

I am in a size 8 phase at the moment (some 6s even). I have thrown out ALL of my size 10/12 clothes so I NEED stuff.

I want to buy clothes online BUT other than Macys and Nordstrom, I don’t really know where. What I REALLY want is inspiration-I would LOVE suggestions for sites/influencers/stores that have curated already put together outfits with links to all of the pieces. I see the capsule wardrobes and love that idea but have not really investigated them much. Are they all just ideas or do some of them sell the pieces directly? And are they decent quality?

Referrals? I have thought about a personal shopper at Nordstrom, but that feels uncomfortable to me for whatever reason. Anyone my size and height want to just send me links to everything you’ve purchased and loved and I’ll just copycat you? Haha

I like Ann Taylor online.

I’ve heard of Stitch Fix but never tried it. This article discusses a number of online clothing subscription companies. You can do this on demand; don’t have to commit to a recurring schedule.

Personal shopper is a great idea. I remember my sil doing that, she said it was a great experience.

I like Anthropologie because their clothing comes in a lot of different shapes and sizes.

Nordstrom you can filter to length.

I buy very little in stores. Have the opposite problem, I’m short

I just searched on Anthropologie, could filter talls and sizes. Not many 8 talls in stock, more 6. I just searched pants

I can’t help with fashion as I also hate shopping. But, a few stores that carry talls would be Chico’s, Gap, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor.

Do you like wearing dresses? Fit-and-flare dresses are much easier to buy online because they don’t have to fit as exactly as pants. Wrap dresses are even more flexible than other dresses. I love Boden as well as usual suspects like Ann Taylor and Lands End.

Lands End and LLBean have various lengths and you can often choose your inseam.
You can enter your exact measurements and a little 3D virtual model tries on the clothes.

I’ll also throw in Coldwater Creek - you can look at one item and they show you choices of “How to Wear It” with a few complete outfits to go with.

I have used Stitch Fix several times and find their clothes to not be of the highest quality. I am now a fan of DailyLook for delivery service.

Maybe not the best quality always but what about Amazon? Easy return. Can filter size. Sometimes has good brands.

When I need something and not interested in shopping at store, I just buy in bulk different sizes and styles at Macys online and then return more than half.

I like the quality at White House Black Market but that may be a little formal for what you said you are looking for.

About a year ago I decided to limit my clothes to black and white (with a bit of grey). It’s made my shopping and dressing sooo much easier. Lots of black pants (shorts and skirts in summer) and black/white tops. I only need one color of shoes (black!) in different styles (Danskos, sneakers, ballet flats). To me the simplicity of the color palate makes things look elegant and much easier to mix/match.

I find my clothes all over, including stores/thrift for a lot.

Are you on IG? If so, I would suggest following annabdaly- she is 5’ 9” with long legs, often wears tall length pants. I really like her style, maybe see if her ideas would suit you. She posts items in various price points.

My tall D has had good luck at banana republic but also Old Navy for pants.

You should check out Susie Wright at www.sosusie.com. She’s a former Nordstrom stylist who puts together lots of capsule wardrobes and many great looking outfits. She provides links to everything. She’s all about the whole outfit, including shoes and accessories.

I also like Tuckernuck for an online source. Free shipping and free returns. I’ve found a good many dresses from them.

Second vote for White House Black Market - stylish and lots of mix and match options (casual, dressy, etc).

She may not be as tall as you but I have enjoyed following “merricksart” on IG.

I do like wearing dresses, but prefer skirts even more. So much less length issues than with pants. When i was still working I wore a lot of skirts with tights and tall boots.

I havent had a wrap dress in a good long while but that style does suit me well! Thanks for the reminder!

I have not had good luck with Amazon clothes…(with the exception of my coatigan!) If anyone has tips on findind decent quality clothes on Amazon, please share!

I live in a relatively affluent retirement town, so there are some real treasures to be found hiding in the racks t our Soroptimist thrift store!

Thanks for the WHBM referral!
