What’s your home state?
Any geographical preferences?
Would you prefer a smaller school, mid sized school, or larger school?
Do you prefer to be in an urban, suburban, or rural environment?
Any majors you’re considering?
Are you a male or female (important for merit scholarships at some schools with unequal ratios of M:F)?
Do you have any special requests as far as the school is concerned? For example, lots of school spirit, greek life, no greek life, outdoorsy student body, religious concerns, etc.

My home state is New Jersey (and I don’t want to be in it for college).
I want to stay away from the bible belt.
I prefer large schools in a suburban environment (but I’d be okay with urban).
I want to major in political science.
I’m actually genderqueer/genderfluid, so I wouldn’t take any scholarships based on gender.
I’d don’t want to go to a school which is rooted deeply in any religion.

This is slightly above the desired COA, but University of Kansas might be a possibility. Assuming you opt not to live in the dorms your sophomore year, it could bring the total COA down to approximately $30k/year

The SUNYs have admitted a preference for OOS kids, which means NJ residents often get in with lower required stats than OOS students. Check out UBuffalo, UAlbany, or SUNY Oneonta (sp?)

UNC-Ashville, while not a large school by any means, is in one of the most liberal parts of North Carolina, and has a total cost of attendance of under $30,000 per year.

Schools in Canada also have a later application deadline, and Queens University might be a possibility.

Gonzaga University gives good merit aid to most students, bringing the total COA down to about $30k per year. It’s a medium sized Jesuit (quite liberal) school in Spokane, Washington.

There’s also Marquette University, which will likely offer good merit aid, and is in Milwaukee, WI.

Are you sure UNC Ashville would be a match? Isn’t my GPA a bit low?

Hmm you’re right, it might be a high match, but your test scores put you near the upper quartile of all enrolled students. Also, I’m somewhat skeptical of the reported GPA if only 20% came from the top 10% of their high school classes, but the average GPA is a 3.99

Are there any schools on your list you’re already considering as reaches or safeties?

University of Akron in Ohio seems like a good match. It has an estimated cost of attendance around $30k per year ([The University of Akron : Tuition & Fees for undergraduates](The University of Akron Tuition & Fees : Bachelor’s Degree Cost : The University of Akron, Ohio)) and your grades/scores make you eligible for a scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 ([The University of Akron : University Scholarships](http://www.uakron.edu/finaid/scholarship-programs/university-scholarships.dot)). It offers PoliSci as a major, is relatively large (23k undergraduates), and is in an urban but small city.

@whenhen- Yeah, that doesn’t look right
@mmmgirl- My list currently contains U of M: Twin Cities, York College of Pennsylvania, North Carolina State, SUNY Buffalo, and Iowa State. I’m not sure what’s a reach/match/safety.
@yankeesfanatic- thanks, i’ll look into the school!

perhaps JMU in VA?

JMU, while awesome, is pretty pricey OOS
