I have dreamed of going to UNT for some time now and major in Music. But after visiting the college I didnt like the college at all. I live close to Denton and have never really liked the town but have always thought UNT would be better. But after today im not sure. I didnt like the atmosphere at all and it just didnt feel like a place i wanted to ever be. I always felt like when you find the colelge youll know thats where you want to go and itll have a homley feeling. Is this wrong? I have a 23gpa 3.0 and strong extra curriculars. If not UNT what are some other schools that i could look into. Is it too early to give up?

I enjoyed your post, OP. A lesson in the ideal confronting the real. There are 3500 colleges in the US; you could attend any one of 3000 of them. You’ll find one that you’ll love. Begin by plugging your stats and interests into the SuperMatch button in the column on the left. Play with the options and narrow down your list. Then figure out what you can afford by running the net price calculators at a half dozen of them and take the Expected Family Contribution results to your parents and see what they say they can contribute to your education. Then narrow the list down further to account for affordability. You’ll fall in love with one of these schools, or not, and it won’t make a difference as long as you work as hard as if you did love the school. It’s all upto you. Get real. Forget the ideal until you meet it in reality.

If you plan on staying in Texas, look at the UT satellite campuses (UTD, UTSA, UTA), Trinity (which seems to elicit the homey feeling from a lot of people), etc.

What I did was pretend that I just got a blank check and could design a college any way I want and it would be for clones of myself. While silly, this exercise ended with me finding the school I’m going to next year- with 3800 colleges in the US, there’s bound to be one that gets you excited and feels like it’s made for you.

Can you really tell from one visit when the school is not in session? What atmosphere didn’t you like?

^I second checking out UTD and UTSA, but also Trinity, St Edward’s, Southwestern, then in the larger region, visit Saint Louis University, Hendrix, Loyola-New Orleans, University of Oklahoma-Norman. These are all very different: which ones do you like best? Why? Then post your reasons here along with your parents’ budget and any regional restrictions (ie. not New England, not Upper Midwest…) and the CC community will gladly list many, many colleges that fit :)
