I truly want to go to DUKE!!!

But the thing is my sat scores are on the lower end of the middle 50 percent range and the deadline for SAT submission has already passed. I was wondering if anyone knows if Duke will take the January SAT? Should I call them up and ask them if its okay for me to take it in January?

they do accept jan score far as i no

that is correct.

look up the deadlines on the website

I took it three times already. Is there a problem taking a 4th time?

Do you have a hook? For example, being a recruited athlete URM would excuse your SATs.

What is considered a “bad” score? I am Native American and really don’t want to take it again…I don’t think my score is bad either.

^That’s awesome. They’ll be all over the Native American thing. With a hook like that, I think a 2050 or something is fine. Maybe even as low as 2000.

Mines 2080

I would think that would be fine.

I have a 2150; sweet!

Do you know what percentage of Duke undergrads are American Indian and what the Native community is like in general (or where I could find this info)? I saw on the UNC website that the percentage is 0.80%…I dunno about Duke though.

According to the class of 2012 profile on the admissions website:

Native American, American Indian, Native Alaskan, or Native Hawaiian = 0.6% for last year

So I suppose you could assume that that figure is representative of the entire student body give or take some.

As for the community, here’s the Duke native american student alliance website:

[Native American Student Alliance](http://www.duke.edu/web/native/)

Edit: the links on that website doesn’t work for some reason, but at least you know there’s an organization for native americans.

I’ve also got another question…

UW-Seattle is the only school that I’m applying to that recommends (but does not require) Native applicants to send in documentation because then they can give scholarships, special consideration, etc… I’ve contacted other colleges to which I am applying and every admissions officer responded that they do not want documentation (even Stanford, where they put me in contact with the liaison to Native applicants). However, Stanford does have an “additional information request” that they send which will allow me to explain my heritage and I think this is really cool.

But that’s what I’m wondering, why do schools like Duke not have these requests for information? I’m applying to the engineering school, so I couldn’t really explain my heritage in that essay. I just really feel like they know a large part of who I am while a school like Stanford will.

On the WashU board, a current undergrad recommended I send a letter explaining my heritage and how it has impacted me…do you think this is a good idea or would they just be bothered?

You can probably send in a letter as extra information if you feel you should explain your heritage, though this would make for a perfect topic for your personal statement as it is a part of who you are as a person.

This is also something that you can bring up in your interview if your interviewer asks if you have additional comments that you weren’t able to include on the app.

Well, I’ve already submitted my CommonApp (everything) so no chance of changing it now…I think I’ll send the letter and talk about it in the interview.

I talked about it briefly in the Additional Information section and my essay was about diversity (I went to Africa this past summer, kind of spoke about that as well as how I’m involved at my school, tribe, etc.), so I hope they’ll like it!

Also if i take the sat again it will be my fourth time taking it… are they going to average it or think that I’m desperate or something?

I believe the stated Duke policy is to superscore your SAT, meaning they take your highest score on individual sections and make a composite total score from that.

So as an example, if you scores are:

800V 750M 720W
760V 800M 740W
770V 730M 800W

Then superscoring results in 800V 800M 800W = 2400

As for thinking you are desperate, I don’t really know about that but my guess is that it wouldn’t matter very much.

Would you recommend me taking it a fourth time to increase my chances at duke? I really do indeed want to go to duke and my essay is great (shows a lot of passion) but i know that Duke is very stat based so yeah any opinions?

i dont see the problem with taking it 4 times… some say its bad but i think 4 is fine

So do you guys think I’m fine with my 2150 SAT?

Is Duke so score-based that I should definitely take it again to ensure a better chance?
