IAMA graduating senior at ucla. Ask me anything.

Did you study CS from Engineering or from LAS? Is there any different?
From the AP list, you mentioned you got credit 31A/31B for AP BC which comes from LAS because engineering only gives you 31A.

If money is not an issue, which is better: Res Hall or Plaza? :D

Hi CremieuxR, I have 2 questions

1) does the Classic Res Hall have air-conditioning after renovation?

2) as you have mentioned when you forgot to pay your tuition all your classes were dropped. may i know how do we pay our tuition and housing? by quarter? month? and what are the ways we can choose to pay our tuition, e.g. credit card?

Thank you!

@CuriousJDG9513 - “Earlier you mentioned that some of your friends switched to public health majors. I plan on applying to public health schools after college and I was wondering what is considered a “public health” major? My major is MIMG (microbiology, etc…).”

I think there is no “public health major” for undergraduates, but rather they decided to apply for public health graduate school rather than apply for Medical School. They stayed in their original majors. There is a public health minor though - http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/catalog12-13-695.htm

@Darthpwner - “How would you consider the grad school placement for UCLA’s CSE program? I really want to go to Stanford grad school for Computer Science and Engineering.”

It is definitely possible to get into Stanford Grad School for CSE from UCLA Undergrad, but you would have to probably graduate with latin honors and do some sort of research with a professor. Every year is slightly different, but this is what you would shoot for.
Cum Laude 3.605
Magna Cum Laude 3.760
Summa Cum Laude 3.861

If you have a >3.50 GPA at ucla undergrad, you are guaranteed a graduate spot if you return to UCLA for graduate school.

CS is only part of the school of engineering. I definitely did receive 31A/31B credit for my calc bc test, so they must have changed the ruling since 4 yearsa ago.

@jojocircus28 - “If money is not an issue, which is better: Res Hall or Plaza?”

I believe every student should have some sort of “Res Hall” experience. Granted you will still meet amazing people in a plaza, it is just more preferred to move to a quieter location once you have your own circle of friends. When you see your floor mates **** drunk in the lounge or bump into random neighbors in the shower, it creates a stronger bond than through meeting people in class or at work. You get to see both the good and the bad sides of a person and because of this, friendships usually become more meaningful. That’s how I feel at least… I took summer school in a res-hall for 6 weeks and some of the people I met during that period became closer friends than the people I lived in a plaza for an entire year.

1) Classic Res Halls do not have air-conditioning. I lived in Sproul for 6 weeks without A/C and my current apartment in westwood also does not have A/C. Usually a personal fan or desk heater is enough for the most extreme cases.

2) There may be different payment schedules, but I always get charged via my UCLA BAR account every quarter. UCLA tuition accepts American Express, Discover, and Mastercard, Western Union, and eCheck. My parents use to pay for my tuition with a credit card since they get rewards like free Mileage, but UCLA now charges a 2.75% service fee for using a credit card, so unless your credit card benefits are greater than the service charge, eCheck would be the way to go. It’s basically the same thing as a physical check but you just type in the details directly online.

I am duplicating a post I put up in engineering that thread been a bit inactive lately…I’m sure this has been asked in some form or another, but now that we are down to decision crunch time we are scrambling to collect some final input. Overall in CS/engineering (I think you are engineering CS), has it been a struggle to get classes you need or are engineering students taken pretty good care of at UCLA? They seem like a pretty elite group there, but wonder what overall experience has been. A battle to get through it or not so bad? We are coming from private school land, so just a bit nervous on whether it is a four year struggle or run pretty well. Not concerned about work load, more about quality of education and working through the system to get what you need. Hope that makes sense, really appreciate insight from those going through or done with it. Thanks CremieuxR.

Oh and congrats on ur upcoming graduation! What will you do next?

@CremieuxR

Thank you for your reply. I think that I will still choose deluxe over classic since with air-con its easier for me to sleep.

Another question. I was accepted into Economics major, but i am wondering if i can double-degree in one of the engineering majors e.g. ME/EE, since i will receive credit from my Alevel economics and will probably have lots of free time.

Thank you

There is PIC(Program in Computing) under the math department which seems to offer a lot of CS courses. How are these courses compare to CSE?

@CADREAMIN

I think the quality of education I received at UCLA was definitely positive. It got me a full time job fairly easily and I found the job search process to be easier than the college application process. You can almost always get into 3 or 4 requires classes per quarter, but they may not always be your top priority ones. It’s been getting more and more tough to enroll in particular classes, but the counselors and professors have been quite nice about adding extra students.

As a student at ucla, you just have to be aware of whatever you need to do, as no one will really remind you. Enrollment dates are posted online a few weeks before the quarter begins and you are responsible to figuring out when to enroll… For example, you won’t be given an “email reminder” to register for classes. If you miss your enrollment time, you will probably not get into your top priority classes. Just be responsible and you’ll be fine :)

@ilovetlbb - Deluxes look amazing. I’ve never been inside the new buildings but I wish I could live there!

It is extremely hard to double major in engineering, and usually not allowed. You can probably easily double major Economics with another major, but maybe not Engineering. If you are personally just interested in learning, you can always just “sit in” during the ME/EE classes and pretend to be enrolled. Maybe just skip the midterm/final and no one will ever know

@AirforceWuhn - The PIC courses are essentially the non-engineering options for people looking to learn about programming. They are great classes to take for people interested in CS, but don’t want to major in computer science. PIC 10 A,B,C essentially covers the same material as the first 2 classes for CSE majors (cs31,cs32).

Thanks CremieuxR. Deciding between private down the street (more $) and UCLA, you get that I’m sure. Thanks and good luck in your next phase of life!

I’m most definitely going to stay in the resident halls during my first year, however, is it a good idea to switch to plazas/suites for my 2nd year? Is it possible? I’m low income so Financial Aide is covering most of my costs but I still have to take out lots of loans, will my COA increase by switching to plazas/suite? Sorry if this question sounds confusing. lol

Plaza and suites cost more, but I would get started this year first then worry about the next one. Who knows what you will that you like/dislike and whether it is worth the price. You may find some cheap off campus housing with a group, ya never know. Let it ride for awhile.

You also have to realize you won’t always get what you choose.

You may end up getting placed in Saxon/Hitch suites or a Plaza your first year.

So I was admitted into HSSEAS as a Computer Science and Engineering major. I like programming, but I’m not really into studying theory, proofs, etc. Is this the right major for me or should I switch to electrical engineering?

There are only 2 classes that primarily focus on theories and proofs (CS 180, CS 181). It’s not so bad.

I’m a high school junior. Would it be wise to take community college classes this summer as a final attempt to boost my UC GPA?

I am an incoming UCLA freshman who took two cc classes the summer before senior year and received A’s in them. I think it helped.

What summer courses should i take after graduating high school? I’m a pre-biz econ major and I want to pursue a minor and specialization, so I wanted to be a bit pro-active

Just take GE’s or a language course if you haven’t passed out of the language requirement.

Use this to search: [Schedule of Classes General Education (GE) Search](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/gesearch.aspx)

And use [BruinWalk: Find what matters on and around the campus](http://www.bruinwalk.com) to make sure you have a good professor :)

Thanks so much for answering pre-fresh questions! I joined a few minutes ago just to ask a question about AP credit. Last year, I received a 5 on my AP Calc AB exam and looking from the UCLA website, I can skip the math placement exam. However, on one of the UCLA Class of 2017 facebook groups, a girl said that UCLA needs to have received this score prior to the placement exam, which takes place in June. However, all of my AP scores will be sent out in July. Do I need to send my AP Calc AB score now or can I wait until July, which by that time, the placement exam will be over?

If you have any
