IB vs. SAT

my cousin in france is going to take the ib test. i wanted to know how it compares to the SAT. what is an average score. i heard that they make it out of 20. how is it different from SAT? is it harder?

due you are completely wrong

the IB is out of 7 each examination

they have almost nothing to do with the SAT I

If you take the diplomma programme the max score of 6 subjects + Extended Essay + TOK = 45 Points

lol its like comparing Oxford to your neighbourhood shopping mall

lol.
The IB diploma is harder than AP (depending on what classes you take obviously… Math Studies can’t compare to BC Calc, but in general the IB HLs are much longer/harder/more work). The SAT, after IB exams… is nothing. The New Writing SAT gives you 30 min (?) to write an essay. Try History paper 3. Two hours, three essays.
The world average on most subjects is around 4.5-5.0 out of 7. The whole diploma is out of 45, and 3 of those points are for writing a 4000 word essay on anything (EE), and a 2000 word TOK essay (theory of knowledge… philosophy). Then you get into external/internal (infernal even?) assesments.
Enough said.

IB is a 2-year diploma
SAT is um…just a standardized test
they don’t compare, just as you wouldn’t compare your hs GPA with your SAT score i guess.
hope that makes sense…

the out of 20 grading is for the french "Baccalaur

thankyou pimpcess05 thats exactly what i was talking about…thanks for clarifying it. my other cousin got a “tres bonne mension” and got into HEC (hautes etudes de commerces)… so thats pretty good i think

that’s hot! are you talking about the one in france or the one in montr

the one in france, paris.

IB is more comparable with AP. they are subject exams (except the IB has more requirements in addition to the exam).

oh ok… so their science/math test would be a combination of AP biology/chemistry/physics/calc?

and then their grammar test would be similar to our AP english/literature

and business (something like that) would be AP econ/democ

It may be more work, but not really harder. I would say in some ways it’s easier because you have tons of time to do some of the stuff that gets counted for your IB grade, whereas in AP it all depends on the exam.

It’s too bad that the Writing Section is only ONE section of the SAT. Doing well on IB won’t help you much in the CR or sentence completion sections. Even for the math, it won’t help you much because you don’t practice the basic-arithmetic-intensive (I use the word “intensive” loosely) that much in IB math (which lets you use your calculator a LOT, along with data booklets).

Even for the Writing section, it won’t help you that much. Maybe it’ll help you in terms of being able to transcribe your thoughts faster and neater onto the page, but the Writing section of the SAT looks for different things than what the IB history or english exams look for. The SAT essay is graded mainly on mechanics with little emphasis on the ideas. The IB essays are graded largely in the opposite fashion.

LOL at those who were laughing.

SAT and IB scores are very different animals, so to speak, but their behavior is signficantly and strongly correlated. Visit this website for a graph:

[IB diploma points vs SAT composite averages at international schools A New Leaf](http://blog.aruguladesigns.com/2010/02/28/ib-diploma-points-vs-sat-composite-averages-at-international-schools/)

The chart shows “that for every 1-point increase in the IB diploma scores, a school will tend to have a 21-point better SAT composite average.”

Oops. The IB diploma points and SAT test averages are positively correlated, but I meant to say not strongly or highly significantly (t = 1.4, p = 0.18)

^You revived a 2005 thread.
