ICE agents arrest man after entering Portland home without warrant

^Part of the idea behind a national ID card would be that’s it no longer sufficient to know someone’s DOB and SSN. You would need to steal their DOB, SSN, and fingerprints/iris/retinal scan.

DL that are Real ID compliant can’t be used to cross a border but they do indicate that legal status was checked by the state before issuing the DL. When I got my California super duper license, I had to show a passport or certified birth certificate and at that time California did not issue driver’s licenses to undocumented persons. Now that they do, the licenses are different than those issued to a citizen and I believe state[with a bar across the top] that the holder is not documented. Many people ‘walk around’ with their military IDs, work ID’s (that may have been issued only after they were e-verified), government ID’s, DL.

Will ICE accept those? I think so for the purpose of not detaining you on the street. You don’t HAVE to have one, but it might be easier if you can easily document who you are. Your choice.

The ICE agent I know is the nicest guy. Much nicer than most cops I’ve met. If you don’t want to show him ID, and he has some reason to detain you, he will have to. That’s his job. My daughter has been asked twice, believed twice on just her word but she has a DL with a star and a passport.

In HI we have real ID licenses. Since we are a sanctuary state, have not heard of anyone asked RE immigration status nor any news reports.

“My daughter has been asked twice, believed twice on just her word but she has a DL with a star and a passport.”

See, this really irritates me. Because your daughter is Asian and is being profiled. That is just wrong. Sounds like you have never been asked or you probably would have mentioned. I have certainly never been asked as a caucasian.

Just remember that you can choose to show ID if asked but you’re not required to just because they ask.

Someone on a work visa or some such could have gotten a driver’s license in a state that checks upon issuance, but the visa could have expired before the driver’s license did.

What does he think about how the ICE agents in the Portland incident acted?

^ wait, agents don’t see anything wrong with taking a 10-year old just out of surgery from her US citizen aunt and sending her to a detention center against doctor’s orders?
How people can hide behind 'it makes no difference, the law states she’s not allowed here" in this case reminds me of the film “a specialist”. Sure, it’s not the same crime nor the same seriousness of inhumanity, but it’s the same reasoning (following the law to the letter despite common sense/humanity).

I hate humans

A serious question: When should she be deported, if at all?

No, I was with her one time and she was with other white people the other time. It was like a DUI checkpoint and every car was stopped and everyone in the car asked.

I think the licenses issued to non-residents indicate their status or that they do not have status. No gold star on the license for them. Plus, someone here on a visa is required to have the visa on them all the time, just like green card holders or other documented non-citizens. If asked for ID by an ICE agent, they are required to show the visa document.

Her ambulance went through an immigration checkpoint and they insisted on asking for ID! Then they followed her to the hospital and removed her after her surgery.

I wonder if the ambulance had had it’s lights and sirens going or not. Can you imagine being delayed getting to a hospital because of an immigration checkpoint that didn’t wave an ambulance through? This is like a really bad movie. A child, just out of surgery…

That CP story sent me through the roof.

I don’t understand how anyone with an ounce of humanity- regardless of politics- can rationalize yanking a recovering young child with special needs out of the care of her family.

Wait…who the heck paid for the surgery? For this girl who wasn’t supposed to be here? Who paid for all the previous medical care?

Oh wait…Medicaid paid…hey…that’s ME.

I have an idea. How about a rip roaring round of THANK YOU for the care (to which she wasn’t entitled) up to this point.

I’ll wait at the mailbox for the thank you card. I’ll bring supplies, a tent, food, water…I suspect it will be a long wait.

Good grief. It’s never enough its it…

^^^WOW. Just, wow. The lack of compassion just astounds me. This is a CHILD. She doesn’t know or understand. I am a taxpayer also. I’m willing to let this one slide.

I think that to be an ICE agent you have to prove you have no soul. It’s like the Nazi SS all over again.

All I can think of are the old war movies when the Gestapo asks someone for “their papers”.

There are lots of things my tax dollars go to that I think are horrific.

Taking care of an innocent, ill, disabled child is one I’d happily pay even more for. (And I put my money where my mouth is by donating.)

And how many more? Really, I am interested in the answer.

Again, how much more? All children are innocent so using this POV, you are willing to pay for any and all in need. How will you be able to finance this generosity. Really…how?

News headlines intended to tug at the heart strings to nothing at all to actually solve a problem.

My daughter did a semester in Mexico and got free medical care while she was there. It was minor, but she just walked into a clinic with someone who could translate.

Just wondering if we actually know who paid for this girl’s care. Always better than assuming.

The article I read said Medicaid because the family couldn’t have afforded care, which was why they came to the US for her.

@greenwitch it says medicaid in the article. Neither CHIP nor medicaid are available to undocumented immigrants though. Unless Texas has a state program.
