My D was at her boyfriend’s away weekend in West Virginia and sent me a FB message that they are driving back to DC today in this snow/ice storm. She had no phone reception and I can’t get a hold of her (and don’t want to distract her if she’s driving). Ugh!!!

Anyone in that area who can tell me how bad the roads are and how much I should worry? On a scale of vaguely uneasy to curled in the fetal position, where should I be?

EPTR, I live along the I-81 corridor in Virginia. Not sure where in WV they are coming from, but it is barely snowing here now - D is in DC and reports snow. Vague unease is okay at this point.

It has begun to snow here in Germantown, MD (near exit 13 on I-270), nice dry white fluffy flakes. About 1/4 inch accumulated in the last half-hour or so. The brine trucks were out last night in this area, so I’d expect that the freeways would be clean.

If these people are snow-country drivers, you don’t have much to worry about. But for local weather & traffic, you might feel better if you check out the latest at WTOP.com

I’m not sure exactly where they are. She didn’t give me a lot of details. She and her boyfriend are both from the northeast so have some experience driving in snow. But, at their age, not a great deal.

Looks like that mess is heading our way tonight. Stay safe, everyone.

We drove from Cleveland to DC/VA last night. Roads were clear but we could see that they had already been brined near PA/MD border (Mason Dixon Line) in anticipation of the ice storm. It is snowing steadily in VA now but the roads have been treated & there are a lot of VDOT plows pre-positioned along the major roads. I’d go with “vaguely uneasy” instead of “fetal position” on your comfort scale.

Sabaray: thank you for the VDOT link. I bookmarked it.

H has a friend coming in town from Princeton tomorrow; they have tickets to the Cowboys/Bears game tomorrow night (which will be miserable, weather-wise). The guy is flying out of Newark around lunch time tomorrow. I checked the Newark weather forecast, and they’re just predicting rain for tomorrow. Is it because Newark is so close to the coast? If this guy can’t get in, I may be recruited to go with H… and I don’t want to!!

Thank you, all! I did hear from D and she said that the morning was rough. Slipping and sliding but it is better now. I told her to get a hotel room on us if the need is there.

Teriwtt, I think some parts of the coast are supposed to get rain. We are on the coast of MA and are predicted to get ice but just south of us rain. Our little area seems to get it’s own unique version of weather from every storm. We are one of those places that the weather channel always shows up and reports from.

What kind of vehicle? VDOT is really good with taking care of the major roads, especially the first storm every year. They will be fine, don’t worry. A sensible speed and keep their distance…

EPTR, did your D make it to DC? I hope she has reached her destination by now. The weather & roads have gotten worse. I would upgrade from “vaguely uneasy” to “biting fingernails” condition.

Snowing in the Newark area now, but temps are supposed to rise and change to rain overnight. Since Newark is a united hub, bad weather in other places can really mess it up.

I’m sending my daughter to friends for the night. We live in the “higher elevations” which get the poorer weather. Plus we are north. DD works about 45 minutes from here…friends live five minutes from her work and it is a flat drive. From here…it’s a hilly drive. No fun in the morning if there is ice!

My husband left at 1 and is now on his flight to Phoenix. I think his trip will be fine.

That’s a relief! I’m glad she’s back safely. We’re preparing for the second wave in our area which is projected to be freezing rain with up to a half inch of ice. Yuck.

According to the weather report, we were supposed to get big stuff starting at 4:00 PM. As of now – a little past 9:00 PM – we’ve had about 16 flakes of snow and that’s it. That works for me.

VH…I want to live where you do! I do NOT want snow, sleet, freezing rain…which is what they are saying for here…starting after midnight. Maybe they will be wrong (wouldn’t be the first time).
