Ice Storm

Fingers crossed for everyone. It’s not even winter yet.

I am about a mile from the ocean and they are calling for rain where I am. Was half hoping for a snow day tomorrow (I’m a teacher :)) but I guess it’s just as well considering the fact that we had EIGHT of those last year and nearly spent the fourth of July in school.

Spoke to our S. He says they have plowed and salted the Arlington, VA roads and he planned to walk 2 blocks to UPS to mail packages. He was very calm and said he’d call the snowline tomorrow to see if work is on or cancelled. He was amused that we were so concerned as he couldn’t see the issue. Was fun speaking with him anyway. His drive is mostly along busy roads and I’m sure they’ll keep them plowed, if it doesn’t melt as it lands. He said there was snow and hail and freezing rain but while we were on the phone it had all stopped, so no worries.

It was supposed to be doing something by now. So far, the nasty weather has stayed to our south.

EPTR, I’m glad your D made it back safely. It was pretty bad last night - we could hear the ice lashing against the windows and we lost power at some point. We could also hear tree branches cracking. It is a beautiful winter wonderland outside with ice coating the tree branches, but the roads are not good. Today most schools are closed and the Federal government has a 2-hour delay. However I think road conditions will improve during the day. I would have been in fetal position if any of my kids had been on the road last night; it was a good night to hunker down and stay home.

Roads are icy here…but schools only had a delay…so they can’t be THAT bad. But now they are saying it might snow tomorrow afternoon too.

And as VH says…it’s not winter yet!

Welcome to New England!

We only got a dusting of snow overnight, I can still see grass. And the mixed sleet/freezing rain hasn’t materialized yet. Don’t know if it will at all.

H is flying out tomorrow morning - but tomorrow’s weather is staying south of us, too.

EPTR, glad your daughter made it back to school safely. I’m a worrier whenever S is driving in bad weather. That is why I am glad he doesn’t tell me every time he goes on a road trip.

Thanks, everyone!

There was very little snow/sleet here on the coast but they are predicting 1-3" of snow tomorrow. Just enough to look festive!

H’s friend got to the Newark airport early, and was able to get on an earlier flight, which got in to O’Hare on time. The flight he was supposed to be on was delayed, he didn’t know for how long, so it was a good thing he got to the airport early!!

The various models show the DC area getting hit (or not) with 2 (or 4 or 5) inches of snow right at rush hour tomorrow. :(

Does look like 100% chance of snow in Arlington tomorrow. Will see if they call a snow day. Was there one today? S never responded to my text.

A lot of the school districts were closed on Monday, and certain workplaces had delays or closings as well. I got up early this morning to check the weather to find out if I have to drive to Rockville for a 9 am meeting: Schools closed. Community college closed. Federal government closed. A whole bunch of other stuff closed. Snow falling heavily out my window right now.

Nope. Not getting into that car to drive 15 miles in this stuff with the insane not-from-snow-country drivers who will be out on the road this morning.

Here are the links from the WaPo and WTOP. Thinking jealously of you in HI!

Our schools in CT are closed today. Snow just started around 7:30 AM. Coming down hard, but it’s only supposed to be 3 inches or so. Certainly not the worst we’ve ever seen.

VeryHappy, maybe the CT snow will give people some traction on the ice. My son said the ice was terrible yesterday. Even though he lives across the street from work, he said he had to walk on the grass as much as possible. Then, when he got to work, several employees were nursing their cuts and bruises, from falling on their way in to work.

toledo, yesterday was actually worse than today. Ice is horrible to walk and drive on, whereas most snow can be negotiated. Your son might want to invest in some cleats to put on his shoes for traction.

DH uses something like these when he walks the dogs in the woods during icy weather.

Actually today isn’t a cakewalk! In this part of CT, the roads were wet or still had some snow on them. They froze like a rock overnight, and now there is a fresh inch or two of snow on top, with the heavier snow heading this way this about lunch time.

I am hoping that my S who is NOT used to driving in ice and snow will not have to. He is a federal employee. Haven’t heard from him but he does mostly drive on major roads, so they should be maintained. There is a slope from his parking garage to the street–not sure if that gets plowed too.

DC is shut down today and that includes the federal government. D is working from home. It is a mess!

DC is mostly shut down today, I’m from snow country so I got in my car and ventured to Starbucks. Roads were slushy and a little slick, but if you’ve ever driven on the snow before it was no problem. I slid more walking from my car to the door!

So glad fed govt is shut down and hope everything gets cleaned up. S is not all that familiar with driving in foul and freezing temps, but he is learning. Guess he will have more time to clean up his place and figure out his plans to join us for the holidays. :)
