If you are from Joisey

(Succasunna, Rockaway, Parsippany, Hopatcong, Netcong, Hackensack, Hohokus, Whippany, Weehawken, Piscataway, Passaic…etc.) all from the Lenape tribe I believe.

Another great New Jersey thread. We seem to have these about once a year.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=34135&page=1&pp=40&highlight=Jersey</a></p>

North Jersey vs. South Jersey:

I grew up in the middle–Monmouth County. North Jersey would call it South, and vice versa. We root for NYC teams, so in that way we’re aligned with the North.

I’ve lived in North Jersey (Essex Co) most of my adult life, and my kids grew up here. I love the neighborhood feel, but I still am a visitor at heart–I really like the country a lot more, it’s a bit congested up here.

We are planning to move to S. Jersey in a couple years; we spend all our vacations in Cape May. We will still root for the Giants, Mets, and Devils when we do.

My family are all total Jersey fanatics. Even though my D is sojourning in Brooklyn, she is still a proud Jersey Girl at heart, and frequently wears the Parkway hat she cadged off a toll collector.

What ties every part of Jersey together to me is water–I have kayaked in the Water Gap, in Cape May Harbor, in Sandy Hook Bay, in Hackensack Meadowlands–all are wonderful places.

My driver’s ed. teacher made me drive around Ellisburg Circle at rush hour my first day behind the wheel. He said he believed in throwing us into the deep end and making us swim. Many years later I found myself accidentally entering the Place de la Concorde during the Paris rush hour, on my way to returning a rental car. My driver’s ed. training immediately kicked in, and I negotiated that mess as only an Ellisburg Circle-trained driver could do. The Place Charles DeGaulle (around the Arc de Triomphe) was a piece of cake by comparison.

You’ll enjoy, no doubt, [the lyrics](www.marcogiunco.com/Testi/003120_08.htm) to the late Dave Van Ronk’s song, “Garden State Romp/Stomp” (listed both ways and I don’t have a record to verify). The entire song consists solely of 80 colorful Jersey place names.

(You can find a tiny audio clip on the [amazon.com page](www.amazon.com/gp/product/samples/B000001K14/ref=dp_tracks_all_1/102-8492501-9897761?%5Fencoding=UTF8#disc_1) of his album, “A Chrestomathy” (Disc 2, track 13).) Jersey place names are the best.

Anyone know if Greasy Tony’s, the Corner Tavern, and incredible Hungarian food are still available in New Brunswick?

You don’t go to the beach, you go downashore…or downashouwr if you are pronouncing it right!!
Sis in law, always a fan, recently relocated full time to a canal side bungalow she renovated inLaValette.Really quiet in the winter!!Water practically on three sides.
To whoever mentioned the downfall of Asbury Park a while back, theres lots of talk of its “rebirth” as gay couples buy up derelict but architectually interesting houses and are reinventing the area!!

I’m glad to see the town coming back, but the Boardwalk is gone–once they took away the the Casino merry-go-round, and Tilly…

Anyone else here Weird New Jersey fans?

For years and years now (long before the book came out) it was common for hs and college kids to go out at night on Weird NJ jaunts to look for places from the magazine. Hard to believe it’s turned into a national franchise, now.

chocoholic, I think you’re right about the names having Lenape origin. I went to Lenape H.S. and in our area, many of the lake communities had streets with Lenape names.

garland, we were Flyer fans and Devil fans but the Devils were the ORIGINAL Devils, from the old Eastern League. I doubt if anyone else here remembers them but I spent much of my youth at the old Cherry Hill Arena. :)

driver, I think the drivers ed. instructors were all the same, making us navigate that crazy Ellisburg circle. I haven’t been there for years but I know that the last time I was in Jersey, both the Marlton Circle and the Medford Circle were gone. Speaking of the Marlton Circle, did anyone ever go to Olga’s?

Lenape HS. We were arch-rivals! I went to Moorestown HS, of Blair Hornstine fame. Olga’s Diner is still there at the intersection of Rts. 70 and 73, even if the Marlton Circle has been transmogrified. Soozievt went to one of the Cherry Hills–which of the directions (east or west) I can’t remember. Perhaps a reunion at Olga’s, followed by a trip downtheshore is in order. ;)

*Home cookin’

It might have been a bowl trip for Rutgers fans who attended Tuesday night’s Insight Bowl at Chase Field.

But for those who ventured into Tempe during their visit, it had to feel a little bit like a home game.

The Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger chronicled how many Rutgers alums took a ride back in time by visiting Greasy Tony’s, a hole-in-the-wall cheese-steak joint at University Drive and Rural Road on the edge of the ASU campus.

Turns out owner Tony Giorgianni lost the Greasy Tony’s he ran in East Brunswick, N.J., near the Rutgers campus for 30 years when it was claimed by eminent domain for a university project.

He wound up in Tempe when his car broke down there in the early 1990s, and during a weeklong wait for repairs, he sought out a cheese-steak joint.

He didn’t like what he found. Thus, Tony started up his old place in a new place.

“How good is this?” Rutgers graduate Erik Dienemann told the Star-Ledger. “Greasy Tony’s is here. Rutgers is in a bowl game here. You can’t make this up.”*

And btw, I used to buy my Tastykakes every day from the lunch trucks on College Ave.

The best county in New Jersey :-)

driver, Moorestown is a beautiful town. I drove through it several times a week during my h/s years because I worked in Cinnaminson. Moorestown Mall was also my favorite mall back in the days when it was Gimbels and Wanamakers there. When my kids were little and we were visiting family in the area, I remember taking them to a playground in Strawbridge Lake Park there by Rte. 38.

Lots of great memories! This thread has really put a smile on my face. :)

1)My son played video games with his son and met Bruce when he came to pick his son up
2)Parents of one of my son’s HS classmates are very good friends of the Springsteen’s - he would come late to school because he was at the Springsteen Christmas party or he would be backstage during the concerts
3) other contacts that I won’t mention for privacy purposes

Hey Tsdad —

Thanks a bunch. I drove by the Tucson Greasy Tony’s a few times and thought it just coincidence it carried the same name as the N.B. NJ former grease headquarters!

I loved Greasy Tony’s.

Another Greasy Tony’s fan. Where else could you get french fries ON YOUR SUB?

I certainly know where the Devils played…the Arena, because it was in walking distance to my house and in fact, that is where I took skating lessons. The Ellisburg Circle was CRAZY…survival of the fittest type driving. It is no longer a circle. Same with the ones in Marlton and Medford…those weren’t as nuts but aren’t circles. Olga’s is still there. One of my brothers lives in Medford. AlwaysAMom, I made a mistake when I told you his kids went to Lenape and realized that actually it is Shawnee. I went to Cherry Hill HS East. My oldest brother started at West but then East was built and so he was the first class at East and in fact, was always the oldest class as they added classes gradually and so he was the first graduating class (1970). We should have a “reunion” down there. On one of my recent trips there, I got together with another CC mom from the MT forum but we ate at another diner on Rt. 70, not Olga’s. I think it was Marlton Diner.

Sports teams is another difference between North and South Jersey. We followed all Philly teams as we only lived 15 min. away. I saw the Flyers win their first Stanley Cup and also missed a day of HS along with every kid in that region for the parade and event at the Army Navy Stadium. Now, my own kids have grown up in a state that has no national sports teams so this has not been a part of their experience (though they’ve seen the Red Sox a couple times).

Susan

PS…another difference between NJ and here in Vermont…where I grew up, going to the mall was like a pasttime…we had the Cherry Hill Mall, Echelon Mall and Morrestown Mall. It was like “something to do”. Not at all the case here. A mall is 50 miles away and mostly just go a few times per year when we are truly shopping. My kids have never “hung out at the mall”.

More good Greasy Tony’s memories here. I can still get my fix at Primanti Brothers here in Pittsburgh, but with fries and coleslaw on the sandwiches.

Attended when Roy Hinson and John Battle were playing and the basketball team was decent. Saw Smithereens at the Court Tavern and REM for free on the lawn at Livingston. Devo at the RAC…

There was a rail car that sold used records (or to my son called them when he was “little big black cds”). Is it still there? And the record/cd store downtown, Cheap Thrills?

dudedad, greasy tonys and corner tavern been gone for some time now.student housing replaced them.new brunswick not what it used to be.i still live close by and not very impessed with the changes, except the court tavern still has some good bands from time to time.and that all i have to say about that.
