qdogpa–actually Tom Waits wrote Jersey Girl.

Another lifelong Jersey girl here. I grew up in Middlesex County and lived in Gloucester County most of my life. My husband and I have been driving up the turnpike our entire married life, as our parents stayed in North Jersey. We were looking forward to fewer trips on the TP, but where did our son get a job after graduating last month? In North Jersey!

By the way, anyone familiar with Duffields in Washington Township? They stated selling corn yesterday!

^ Corn you say …I think Hammonton Blueberries, too

Garland, well aware of that… Bruce made it famous by covering it,…i know a little about Waits,Rod Stewart covered his song Downtown Train…i wonder how many average Bruce fans realize how many songs he wrote for others that were a moderate success…

SJCM, I had Hammonton blueberries over the weekend. Bought the corn for dinner. It was heavenly!

Blueberry Festival in Hammonton this weekend! I have never been.

I bought Hammonton blueberries in Toronto today. :)

I bought Hammonton blueberries in BJs today…had every intention of getting them at my local farm stand when I picked up some early NJ produce , but couldn’t resist the bulk price.
I grew up in Mass cranberry country , but have sinced learned that there are more cranberries produced here in the garden state.
For all the dissing people do about this state , they have absolutely no clue how superior our state is for many , many fruits and veggies

Corn. You guys in New Jersey are eating corn, while I am stuck in the wastelands of California.

and peaches…better than that other state that brags about their peaches…

blueberries. corn. peaches. tomatoes. None better.
I love Jersey summer! (and fall.)

garland, we are growing corn successfully this year ( tried and failed in the past ) I never knew that each plant only produces 1-2 ears …now I know why the cornfields are so massive ![]()
The tomatoes however , 50-60 . We’re hoping in another week or so we’ll start to see red

Ours are running late. H starts them from seed, and got a late start this spring. I don’t think we’ll see red for a while; they’re pretty small right now. OTOH, we’ve eaten a ton of green beans, snow peas, radishes, and basil so far, and the squash, eggplants, and brussel sprouts are developing well. That’s great to hear about the corn–enjoy!

brussels sprouts ? this intrigues me…we are not the most experienced farmers. Also dabbling in grapes for fun. Are you in Cape May ? There are a few small wineries down there we’ve been checking out

Does anyone know about the cranberry bogs? My parents are in Toms River and took a ride about a month ago. My father is very interested in seeing them during harvest time. They said that there was nothing going on and that there wasn’t a soul around. My mother said it was very quiet. She was a little spooked! Is there a certain time of year that they possibly do tours?

Harvesting, and the flooding of the bogs, is usually in October. I’m not sure about tours at the privately owned farms but I think I’ve heard that those bogs that are in state or county parks offer weekend tours during harvest season. There used to be a cranberry festival in Chatsworth during the harvest but I’m not sure that they still do that.

Why is it in NJ that if you miss your destination, like a store or a restaurant on a main divided road, you have to drive 3 miles before you can do a U turn to turn back and another 6 miles to make another U turn to get back to where you were?

lje–the brussels sprouts are surprisingly easy. H started them from seed last year; the only tough part was that he spent a lot of the summer picking cabbage moth caterpillars off them. But we got sprouts all fall and winter long, enough for, I’m guessing 15 side dishes of them from four plants. And they were delicious!

We’re near Cape May. Have been to Cape May Winery several times (we’re very near that), but haven’t checked out the others yet. Hawk Haven looks interesting, and there’s the unfortunately named Turdo nearby. There’s another one starting out on the Island, but I don’t know if they’ve gone public yet.

Not so fast! When DS1 was in school in the Boston area, I took a photo of a sign that actually said Left Turn on Red. I was dumbfounded by the concept.

Alwaysamom: Thanks for the info!
