Hey, hope this is the right place for this.
Do you either go the IGETC path or get an associate’s degree, or do you do both? Current hs student planning to go to Foothill then transfer to a UC.
Neither is strictly required for transfer to a UC or CSU.
IGETC is similar (though not identical) to the CSU general education pattern, and completing it is accepted as fulfilling lower division general education requirements at CSUs and most majors at UCs (others, individual courses will be matched to general education requirements).
An associates degree does not necessarily cover the base requirements to transfer, the general education requirements or IGETC, and the major prep courses for the desired major at the target UC or CSU. However, an associates degree for transfer (ADT, AA-T or AS-T) is designed to cover CSU general education (which may complete IGETC if courses are chosen with that in mind) and major preparation for related majors, so that a student who transfers to a CSU after completing an ADT can complete the BA/BS in two years (four semesters or six quarters) of full time course loads.
About the ADT describes ADT programs at Foothill.
If the target major is not one that is a close match for ADT programs, then the student needs to look up the needed major prep course work at https://www.assist.org .
One other thing to consider is that if you have AP scores, be sure to look up their credit and placement at the target UCs and CSUs, which may differ from what Foothill gives. What Foothill gives is mostly relevant if you use them as part of Foothill-certified IGETC, or as prerequisites to courses you will take at Foothill but not the UC or CSU that you transfer to.
I understand, thank you!
since you mention you want to go to a UC take a look at the TAG program which offers guaranteed admission to one out of several UCs (Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) | UC Admissions) and the TAP program which gives admission preference for Letters & Science majors at UCLA (https://admission.ucla.edu/apply/transfer/ucla-transfer-alliance-program)
When you start at Foothill be sure to make use of the transfer center. They will have workshops explaining the process, counselors to help you, and UC counselors regularly visit every CC to meet with students.
We found the IGETC useful since it guarantees your AP and CC all count for the GEs at your UC or CSU. An AA is nice to have but not necessary for transferring.
The most important path is following assist.org
Thanks guys, and thanks Mike for letting me know about the TAP! I knew about the TAG but not that.
